The Third Engineer Officer shall be responsible to the Chief Engineer Officer for upkeep, maintenance and operation of equipment under his direct charge as detailed bellow:

•Maintenance, upkeep and operation of all the Auxiliary Engines and related safeties.

•Maintenance and upkeep of Auxiliary, Exhaust Boilers related auxiliaries and safeties.

•Maintenance and upkeep of Emergency Generator Engine and Lifeboat Engines and related safeties.

•Any other machinery and equipment as assigned by the Chief Engineer Officer in exceptional circumstances.

•Maintenance and overhauling of Main Engine fuel valves.

•To maintain required quality of Jacket Cooling water and Boiler water/ feed water.

His other principal responsibilities shall be to:

1.Carry out all other repairs and maintenance as assigned by the Chief Engineer Officer.

2.Carryout the Engine Shipboard Operations and Watchkeeping efficiently and safely as per the relevant SMS procedures.

3.Ensure that the machinery and equipment under his charge is kept clean at all times and all leakages are promptly rectified.

4.Maintain all up to date records of maintenance of machinery and equipment under his charge in proper registers and as per the relevant SMS procedures.

6.Identify potential hazards associated with the operation of Engine Room machinery/ equipment and systems and remove/ report to the Chief Engineer Officer accordingly.

7.Follow personally and ensure that the Staff working under him also follows safe working practices as defined in UASC procedures and be guided by ‘Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen’.

8.Ensure that all the relevant SMS procedures, particularly those related to safety and pollution prevention are observed within his area of responsibility.

9.Inform the Chief Engineer Officer immediately of any defects, which may affect the safety or put the marine environment at risk.
