Metorex (SA) is a joint venture with Jinchuan (China) and owns two (2) copper mines in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and one (1) copper mine in Zambia. Kinsenda Copper Company is a copper mine situated in a remote area of the DRC and consists of a vertical shaft and a new decline shaft. Kinsenda Copper Company was previously owned by a Japanese company until 1983. The mine was then managed by a Canadian company on behalf of the DRC government until 1987. The mine was then returned to the government and managed by a government mining company. Due to the inflow of ground water into the underground workings of the mine, mismanagement of water pumping and due to the poor infrastructure, the mine was flooded. In 2011 Metorex and Jinchuan completed the visibility study and environmental impact assessment and de-watering of the mine re-started. The infrastructure of the whole mine had to be changed and upgraded. This included proper electricity supply from Zambia and the DRC. A diesel operated power plant as a contingency source, a copper process plant and the starting of a new decline shaft and underground development to the ore body to change the mine into a meganized mining operation. Accommodation also had to be built with a water treatment plant, new offices, new fully equipped workshops, as well as upgrading of the farm which supplies maize meal to the employees as part of the mining requirement of the DRC government.
