Key achievements and responsibilities
• Head of a department with 5 faculty members & 80 students on average (as of 2011)
• Completely restructured the program, and led the program through the Ministry of Higher Education’s’ accreditation process, which was completed and awarded in 2012
• Established strong program connections with different planning consultancies, developers, and governmental planning agencies in Abu Dhabi
• Helped introduce quality control measures throughout the university
• Taught: land-use and urban design studios, housing policy, GIS, and transport courses
• Produced a number of research papers related to planning issues in the UAE
• Was a guest speaker in a number of forums and professional meetings
• Was one of the reviewers of the Urban Planning Council’s safety and security manual
• Helped establish the UAE’s chapter of Lamda Alpha International Association - currently on the steering committee
• Was a researcher in the areas of housing affordability and neighborhood revitalization with a focus on the state of Florida
• Worked in the capacity of a consultant for the center in the area of crime prevention, and was one of the PI’s for a major research grant
• As a center representative: I worked closely with the City of Tampa’s planning department (Florida, USA) in relation to the revitalization of the University Heights District in the city
• Produced two policy documents focusing on reversing the decline of University Heights District, and introduced measures to combat crime in the area
• Taught a course in housing policy with an emphasis on Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regulations
• Worked in the capacity of urban planner in the division’s planning section - reporting directly to the head of planning
• Helped prepare and complete the university’s comprehensive master plan document for 2005-2015
• Reviewed proposed development applications from consultants
• Maintained and regularly updated the division’s GIS library
• Created multiple GIS maps for the use of the planning team and the incorporation into the master plan document
• Helped organize a series of community charrettes and received input from different stakeholders
• Helped draft the Historic Preservation Master plan for the university of Florida
• Was a member of Land Use and Facilities Planning Committee, Lakes, Vegetation and Landscaping Committee, and Preservation of Historic Buildings and Sites Committee
• Conducted traffic counts, parking studies, and biking-route studies
• Coordinated with the City of Gainesville’s planning division on a number of projects
• Was involved in the design and design development of a number of villas and residential-towers
