Current Full time job - Macmillan Palliative Care Service Improvement Lead

June 2015 - Present

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board

Cardiff, United Kingdom

June 2015 - Present

• I currently work within the Palliative Care Department at the Community Division of ABUHB and am able to utilise my previous and current experience in implementing The Gwent Palliative Care Strategy across ABUHB and the partner organisations who jointly developed the Palliative Care Strategy to ensure that all patients with palliative care/ end of life needs, their families and carers receive a high quality, personal service which is safe, dignified and respectful.
• In this role I provide the Programme Management support and direction to all 8 workstreams of the Strategy. I am a permanent member of the 8 workstreams ensuring the agreed deliverables and objectives are regularly recorded, monitored and achieved by the specific deadlines. I also act as a conduit between the workstreams to avoid duplication and ensure a more effective and efficient use of resources in implementing the Strategy across ABUHB, Hospice of the Valleys and St Davids Hospice Care. In this role I developed an overall Programme Plan encompassing 8 individual project plans for the workstreams constituting the Strategy.
• I have also developed a Communication and Engagement Plan for the Strategy and created a ‘one stop’ webpage to record ABUHB and the partner organisations’ contact details as well as achievements throughout the implementation of the Strategy. I have put together a Newsletter to increase awareness and engagement with the Gwent Palliative Care Strategy. The newsletter is widely distributed to all Healthboard staff, Primary Care teams, Local Authorities staff, WAST, Third Sector Organisations and Care Homes.
• Using my negotiation skills, persistence and resilience I managed to recruit representatives from Frailty, Social Services, Divisional Nurses, CHC, Nursing & Care Home Forum Chair, Local Authorities, WAST and Third Sector Organisations for most of the workstreams. I also increased awareness of the Strategy, engagement of the various sectors and organisations and participation from the same within the work of the workstreams.

April 2013 - April 2015

DHSS, Welsh Government

Cardiff, United Kingdom

April 2013 - April 2015

Whilst at Welsh Government, I worked within the Workforce & OD department at the DHSS and was able to utilise my previous and current experience in influencing delivery of the OD Strategy and Planning branch priorites within the Workforce and OD Strategy and Business Plan.
• I commenced my 2 year secondment as Project Manager - Medical on April 2013 then my role within the Workforce and OD department changed to Policy Officer in July 2014, due to the restructuring of the department.
• My role heavily contributed to the development of the Strategic Intelligence Function to increase the visibility and value added by the directorate so that it played a more proactive role in realising Ministerial ambitions for NHS Wales.
• In my role as Policy Officer I participated in the development of arrangements to ensure effective workforce planning across NHS Wales organisations.
• I also participated in the development of arrangements to ensure effective Governance, internal audit, integrated medium term plans and legislation across NHS Wales organisations.
• I designed an all Wales Workforce Performance Dashboard and an all Wales NHS Minimum Dataset within Welsh Government to assist in the NHS Workforce Planning/ Redesign.
• I also designed a departmental database for frequent data requests to enable a streamlined, unified approach in providing responses to internal and external stakeholders appropriately.
• I oversaw the analysis of Medical and Dental vacancies and establishment data and provided training in the use of M&D vacancies database and the Consultants’ Appraisal & Revalidation process to other members of the department.
• I had designated responsibilities for provision of accurate timely information and the use of all statistical data and NHS Information within the Workforce and OD Department at Welsh Government.
• I regularly handled and manipulated function specific information, which may have been sensitive, complex or confidential and appropriately recorded, transfered and/or co-ordinated such information in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
• As Project Manager - Medical I collated, recorded and monitored Consultants’ appraisal and revalidation progress at Welsh Government and provided advice to the Chief Medical Officer and other officials on actions required to improve appraisal rates and successful completion of the revalidation process for medical & dental staff groups. Liaised locally and nationally with Revalidation Support Units, Government officials, DoH and the Deanery. Attended and was a member of the Wales Revalidation Delivery Board at WG.
• As Project Manager I managed, recorded, monitored and arranged regional visits and meetings for the National Consultants Clinical Excellence Awards - Welsh Sub-Committee. Monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of E-rostering also formed part of my role.
• Meeting tight deadlines and working under pressure is the normal pattern in providing responses to oral or written queries to the Minister of Health and Social Services, in my current role; whether this entails a direct response from the OD strategy and planning branch or any other section within Workforce and OD Department.
• I am required to make a judgment call on a range of complex issues relating to the function, using my own expertise and initiative.
• I work with health and social care directorate colleagues in the Welsh Government, the National Leadership and Innovation Agency for Healthcare (NLIAH), UK health departments, Health Boards and Trusts and the British Medical Association in the development of national and local policies which support the changes in the delivery of health and social care in Wales. I also work with colleagues in the Welsh Government’s Knowledge and Analytical Services, and WEDS (Workforce, Education and Development Services), to develop proposals for enhancing the transparency of NHS Wales workforce data.
