Electrical erection of Egnatia Motorway / section from the tunnel of Ag. Nikolaos to Panagia.

• Client: AKTOR S.A.
• Consultant / End User: Egnatia Odos S.A.
• Contractor: SEMAC Construction S.A.
• Contract value: 2.4M EURO
• Construction period: Aug 2008 - May 2009

Egnatia Motorway is a four-lane motorway, with a cross section width of 22 m, with two traffic lanes and a hard shoulder per direction and a new jersey separating the two directions (project length 670km). The section of the Egnatia Motorway crossing Epirus it was the most difficult to construct from the technical viewpoint, due to the fact that the road passes from an area characterized by difficult geomorphological conditions, as it intersects perpendicularly the mountains of Pindos.

As part of SEMAC Construction S.A. scope of work was the Electrical Erection of the section from Ag.Nikolaos tunnel to Panagia Interchange:

- Τwin-tube tunnel of Aniliou 2, 2km length per bore.
- Twin split carriageway bridge of Metsovitikos 530m length, very high piers (>100 m) and a middle span of 230 m.
- Twin-tube tunnel of Metsovou 3.5 km length per bore.
- Twin-tube tunnel of Malakasi A 0.5 km length per bore.
- Twin-tube tunnel of Malakasi C 0.35 km length per bore.
- Twin-tube tunnel of Ag. Nikolaou 0.5 km length per bore.

A main consideration in tunnel design is the provision for cross passages between the tunnel bores for the case of a fire emergency (Every 350m / Metsovou tunnel has 10no). Special emphasis is placed on the installation of a high-standard monitoring and control systems, which will ensure the safe operation of tunnels. Tunnels are also fitted throughout with a special ventilation system, built to cope both with ordinary operating conditions and with smoke extraction, e.g. in case of fire. This system automatically (with the possibility of manual operation, if necessary) monitors the quality of the air in the tunnel and keeps it at the desired level. Finally, control centers with high-technology telematics systems ensure the safe and economic operation not only of the tunnels but also of the entire Motorway.

Regarding the erected systems, we can mention indicatively:

Grounding & Lightning, MV Substations & LV Electrical rooms, MV/LV Power Distribution, Normal & Emergency Lighting, Ventilation Power supply, Closed-circuit television (CCTV), Fire Alarm & Fire Fighting, CO monitoring, Traffic Signaling, Variable Message Signs, Variable Speed Limit Signs, Tunnel Radio communication, Loop detectors & sensors, Emergency Roadside Telephones, Road Weather Information systems, Street Lighting, Heat tracing system, ELV & FO backbone signaling cables for integration with the Traffic Management System (TMS SCADA).

• Client / End User: Greek Public Sector / Nea Odos
• Contractor: AKTOR S.A.
• Management period: Aug 2007 - Jul 2008

The strategic goal and a requirement of the daily operation, was to minimize accidents and to contribute to the safe movement of drivers. The Tunnel Traffic Management Centre equipped with cutting-edge control systems. Closed-circuit television (CCTV), Fire Alarm & Fire Fighting, CO monitoring, Ventilation, Lighting, Traffic Signaling, Variable Message Signs, Variable Speed Limit Signs, Traffic announcement, Loop detectors & sensors, Power Distribution monitoring, Emergency Roadside Telephones, Road Weather Information systems, the majority of them integrated in a Traffic Management System (TMS SCADA), ensured safe circulation and addressing of all incidents in a timely and effective manner. With the goal of optimizing maintenance over the entire infrastructure, specialized staff was carried out regular and thorough inspections throughout the length of the motorway and it was in a state of full emergency response readiness in cases of accident. The 24 hour Patrol & Intervention units where monitoring continuously the entire length of motorway.
