The job entailed providing emotional support for students that required it. The job also included being present and offering support in the dicult situations of academic misconduct, which required a delicate balance of being a safe space for the student while being assertive with the consequences of misconduct. During my year as a student counsellor I organised a mental health week, one colleague offered a free yoga class, and I gave a talk in philosophy and the stoic school of thought, and how we can apply its teachings to our modern day struggles to help with anxiety and depression.
Under the supervision of Dr. Dana Almohazey, in the Stem Cell research department. In a project investigating oxidative stress pathways in colorectal cancers. Tasks included protein modifying enzyme cell culture experiments, protein extraction and quantification, and western blotting. PCR, qPCR, DNA and RNA isolation. And in collaboration with the NanoMedicine department, treatment of a panel of cancer cell lines with target drugs followed by MTT assay. At the end of each week, a meeting was set with the aforementioned supervisor to discuss results and the experiments to be conducted the week to follow.
The research entailed various laboratory techniques such as; cell culture and treatment, DNA extraction purification and quantification. Gel electrophoresis. Protein extraction and quantification. Western blotting. PCR, plasmid transformation and isolation. Isolating, cloning, and sequencing gene of interest. Immunofluorescence staining and microscopy. And online statistical software, Cancer genome Bioinformatic tool CBioPortal. The degree required writing and defending a dissertation. Which cultivated many of the important skills that make a successful independent researcher; writing and optimising protocols, data analysis and interpretation. Problem solving and a proactive attitude proved most important as challenges arose in the nature of laboratory work. As research was abruptly cut short by the COVID19 pandemic, it highlighted the important attributes that are needed in the face of uncertainty, resilience and self motivation.
The Biotechnology bachelor’s of science explored the different disciplines of biology and technological approaches used in science to formulate and answer research questions. The degree included; (Cell biology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Human Genetics, Immunology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Tissue Culture and Animal Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Forensic Science, Microbiology, Microbial Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology). All of which included supplemental laboratory work which cultivated laboratory knowledge in wet and dry lab. The degree also required a research project which was done in the Research Institute of Medical & Health Sciences (RIMHS) at the University of Sharjah under the supervision of Dr. Nasir Khan.
