L’ESSAIM (École Supérieure des Sciences Appliquées pour l’Ingénieur – Mulhouse), une école publique interne à l’Université de Haute Alsace, dont les diplômes d’ingénieur sont habilités par la Commission des Titres d’Ingénieur et l'origine des enseignements dispensés remonte à 1861. Depuis 2006, l'école existe dans la forme actuelle sous le nom de ENSISA (École Nationale Supérieure d’Ingénieurs Sud Alsace). Elle est née de la fusion de l’ENSITM (École nationale supérieure des industries textiles de Mulhouse) et de l’ESSAIM (École Supérieure des Sciences Appliquées pour l’Ingénieur – Mulhouse). En nombre d’étudiants, c'est la deuxième école d’ingénieurs en Alsace, répartis dans cinq spécialités (Informatique et Réseaux, Mécanique, Textile et Fibres, Systèmes de Production-Génie Industriel et Mécanique).
