Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) Kuantan is the largest government hospital in State of Pahang located in Kuantan with total bed of ~ 900. It’s the major tertiary government institute and referring centre in the Pahang State. It has all the major departments including Medical, Surgical, Paediatrics. Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oncology, Ear Nose and Throat, Ophthalmology, Dentistry and Occupational Health. Dato’ Dr. Tahir Mahmood joined the medical department in September 1997 and is the most senior person in the department. His key role and responsibilities are as follows:
1- To review all the patients admitted in the medical wards during ward rounds and order the required investigations and start preliminary treatment according to the clinical assessment of the patients.
2- To show the newly admitted patients to consultants and modify the treatment based on investigation results and consultants’ advice.
3- To supervise the house officers posted in the medical department and teach them the clinical procedures needed in day-to-day management of the patients. Also, having a teaching round twice a week and teach the staff nurses and medical students along with the house officers.
4- To attend the General M-OPD clinic and review the patients discharged from the medical wards and optimise the management plan. Also, see all the newly referred patients to M-OPD from the other departments within the hospital, the district hospitals and general practitioners and to make the management plan including specific investigations and provisional treatment.
These patients are to be reviewed in two to three weeks to optimise their medication.
5- To run the speciality clinic in rotation with other medical colleagues twice a week; the speciality clinics being run under the umbrella of medical department are.
• Diabetic Clinic,
• Asthma Clinic,
• Rheumatology Clinic,
• Chest Clinic,
• Gastro Clinic,
• Clinic of Infectious Diseases,
• Haematology Clinic,
• Neurology clinic etc.
6- To do on call long duties in rotation with other colleagues to give round the clock medical coverage to in-patients and to attend the emergency calls from other departments.
7- To attend all the patients in A & E and make the plan for their admission in the medical wards or discharge with the follow-up schedule to be reviewed at M-OPD.

• Echocardiography Training Course at Cardiology Clinic Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan Kuantan (March 15th, 2021, to July 15th, 2021).
• A clinical attachment in the department of General Medicine, Hull Royal Infirmary, East Riding Education Centre, United Kingdom (October 4th2004 to October 21, 2004); as a preparation for MRCP P@rt 2 clinical examination (PACES).
• MRCP P@rt 2 Clinical Examination Preparatory attachment in the department Cardiology, General Medicine & Neurology (each one for a period of one week respectively ) in the University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur. (November 7th2005 to November 25th, 2005).
