Levels were also taken throughout the entire 54 km detailed as built survey was then carried out of everything in the tunnels and the rails at every 2 m for an additional laser sweep survey by a third party. Surveys of all platforms for planned works and some design issues that evolved from the as built surveys, including all signalling equipment.

On the Liskard by-pass until such time as the Barrier began. On site from the first contract date to establish the survey control from which all control originated. One of four surveyors I was the only one with Hydrographic experience. I was on the contract from start to finish. The surveyors performed all setting out for permanent works. The tolerances of +/-1mm was achieved throughout the contract. The construction involved 9 “piers”, 2 abutments, and a series of sills which were sunk between the permanent piers, these were constructed in dry dock, 11 cofferdams were piled across the Thames to house the piers some 50m deep. Tens of thousands of holding down bolts were all installed by the surveyors. Dimensional control surveys were undertaken to assist in the placement of all the giant machinery in the RC frames of the piers.
