Leading Infrastructure Disciplines for the Oman section of a new Abu Dhabi to Sohar rail link, a 140km freight rail link, during the Preliminary Design which enabled the client to launch the tenders for the Design & Build contracts. The Infrastructure Lead role required coordinating the civil disciplines (track, alignment, roads, earthworks, structures and hydrology) to ensure a coordinated design deliverables were suitable for the tender launch. The role also included coordination between the other major disciplines; Rail Systems, Operations, Environmental and Architecture for all the elements of the project (Mainline, Depots 1 Freight facilities). I found a key element to working with a Middle Eastern client is to ensure they are included in all the decision-making process. Therefore, I had to present several mini optioneering studies to the client and guide them to the best engineering solution (within the project boundaries).
This project is the 1st step in the Omani Rail Master Plan therefore I had to ensure the proposed infrastructure didn’t impact on the future project planned for the Omani rail network.
There was also a need to hire local sub consultants in various disciplines. Therefore, I was required to manage the hiring process of the sub consultants and continue with the management of the budgets and services provided from the various specialists.
For the preparation of the D&B contracts, I was involved with the preparation of several of the tender documents, ensuring the document were as clear as possible to help to minimise any potential technical queries from the tenders. This has given me a good understanding of the tender process within a GCC county. And for the infrastructure packages I was required to be part of the evaluation team for the Pre-Qualification submissions.
