Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Job Description:
•Assesses newborns condition upon admission.
•Provides immediate routine procedure such as suctioning of oral and nasal discharges, bathing and weighing, placing tag, & comforting baby.
•Recognizes untoward symptoms such as apnea, respiratory grunting, etc.
•Checks the condition of the umbilical cord, fontanelles, abdomen, extremities, and others.
•Observes and records the amount and color of baby’s first voiding and stool its characteristic, color and consistency
•Records number of diaper changed every shift.
•Identifies characteristics of cry if it is good, poor and weak.
•Observes rooting and sucking reflex, condition of skin; its color and integrity.
•Performs prophylactic treatment received as indicated and recorded.
•Monitors vital signs frequently as per doctors order especially those with pathologic cases.
•Performs emergency measures such as resuscitation, oxygen administration, amb-ubagging and suctioning.
•Monitors respiration, the use of resuscitator and apneic episodes.
•Secures consent and informing relatives for special procedure to be done to patient, e.g. umbilical catheterization, cut down, etc.
•Monitors intravenous fluids such as: labeling of bottle, amount of additives to be infused, duration, rate of flow, time started and time to be consumed, the insertion site its characteristic and appropriate and timely referral.
•Performs immunization before discharges as per doctor’s order.
•Explains discharge instructions with advised follow-up check-up home medication instruction and health prevention.
•Documents nurse’s notes consistency and legibly.
Maintains a clean and safe environment of the patient.
•Gives first aid on emergency cases.
•Participates in teaching health to patients and their families.

•Performs independent functions and duties such as; Parameter monitoring, giving health teachings, bedside nursing care, doing ECG.
•Assists doctor during manipulation and reduction of fractures, incision and drainage, chest tube insertion, intubations, T&S, CVP, wound exploration, aspiration, nail evulsions, foreign body removal, supra- pubic catheterization, resuscitation, etc.
•Provides referral of the patient to the other hospital, polyclinic and general practitioner as ordered by the doctor.
Records data and information about the patient’s conditions.
•Documents all complains of signs and symptoms to patient’s card.
•Monitors and records vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, heart and respiratory rate.
•Refer to preferred physician on duty.
•Explains prescribed medications correctly and properly.
•Provides initial doses of prescribed medications.
•Advise follow-up check-up depending on doctor’s order.
Makes rounds during the endorsement of the outgoing shift.
