Metallurgical and materials engineering plays a role in all manufacturing processes which convert raw materials into useful products adapted to human needs. The primary goal of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is to provide a fundamental knowledge-base associated with materials-processing, their properties, and their selection and application It is a leading field in metals, especially ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, welding and joining, and extractive metallurgy; and in ceramics. It also concerns ways of improving materials that will enable next-generation technologies.
