Learning about the operation of the plant which includes visits to the solar park, switch yard and PV Lab. The solar park houses approximately 0.4 million solar panels with a name plate capacity of 100MW providing energy to a 132KV line. The PV lab for quality assurance tests on solar panels is one of its kind in Pakistan housing some very expensive equipment for running tests like Electroluminescence and power at standard test conditions.

The internship was directed towards making a single axis solar tracker employing maximum power point tracking (MPPT), to increase the efficiency of solar panels. The project design comprised of light dependent resistors (LDR’s), the varying light intensity would change the resistance of LDR’s. A microcontroller would then use this change in resistance of LDR’s to compute the difference in solar irradiation on the LDR’s placed at the panel sides and turn the panel towards the side with more light intensity. Moreover, to extract the maximum available power from the panel MPPT through a cuk converter was incorporated.

The research project was based on utilizing various data clustering techniques like k-means and fuzzy logic to check variability in energy consumption patterns of 200 houses in Sweden based on various household attributes like ventilation systems, insulation, number of living individuals etc. The aim was to link the outcomes of the project to load forecasting for ensuring energy efficiency in the houses. Consequently the research was based towards the area of smart grids.
