Resident Engineer at Bechtel Corporation
  • Gabon
  • January 2011 to February 2012

Stade de l’Amitié Sino-Gabonaise - Libreville, Gabon - January 2011 to March 2012
Project Management/Construction Management services for the projects pertaining to the CAN/AFCON 2012 event (African Confederations Cup Football) in the Angondjé area of Libreville, including the ‘Stade de l’Amitié Sino-Gabonaise’ (40, 000 seats) and parking lot, 2 hotel developments, utilities and roadwork
Client: Gabonese Ministry of Sports
Contractor: Shanghai Construction Group
Assigned as the Resident Engineer on the ‘Stade de l’Amitié’ project, responsible to ensure timely delivery of the Stadium, destined to host the final of the CAN/AFCON 2012 event, which kicked off on 21st January 2012. An additional constraint was the Client’s requirement to achieve substantial completion of the works early so to ensure taking place of an inaugural game between Gabon and Brazil on 11th October 2011.
The key challenge was the fact that the stadium was originally not built for the event and thus required a substantial number of upgrades and short term design changes to ensure compliance with applicable regulations (FIFA/CAF). Ensured coordination between our in-house engineering department, external specialist consultants and the main contractor and brought on board and managed our own set of sub-contractors on site to complete the works in time. This included full removal and replacement of the drainage, irrigation system and main pitch itself.
One of the biggest hurdles to overcome was the installation and commissioning of main utility lines (power and water) and connection to supply the stadium, as the Angondjé area was a remote greenfield development located outside of Libreville. Took the decision and drove the design and installation of a water treatment plant, water storage facilities and a dedicated pumping station within the premises of the stadium and therewith ensured timely supply of water to commission and handover the stadium for the event.

Managed the sub-contracts pertaining to the interior fit-out and MEP packages for the Armani Hotel section of the building in full.
One of the main challenges on the project was to ensure the coordination between the fit-out and MEP sub-contractors; to do so I set up a monitoring tool to follow up the MEP inspection procedure and subsequent issuance of MEP clearances.
Revised and managed the construction schedule until the punch lists per room were cleared and the testing and commissioning had been completed, to achieve timely completion and handover of the five star Armani hotel.
