As the Media Engagement Advisor, I am responsible for providing technical support to the state and federal teams on developing and implementing strategies to work with the media at the National, State and Regional levels. I work closely with other strategic advisors on media engagement and manage their inputs to regional, state and federal teams, whom they must provide with mentoring and continued support. As the Media Engagement Advisor, I am part of the Technical Support Team and am expected to work closely with other members of the team to ensure a co-ordinated approach, as well as actively collaborate with the other Pillars of PERL and relevant contact points in other development programmes.
Primary Responsibilities:
* I contribute to thinking on PERL’s and ECP’s overall strategic direction and approach
* I support the delivery of periodic assessments of traditional and new media and ICT mechanisms. Support delivery teams to use research findings to set strategies for engaging Ministries, Departments and Agencies and identifying priority partnership and issues to support, including the design of interventions and development of work-plans
* I facilitate periodic reflection and review of ECP’s approach to engaging the media in line with new information and learnings. I also ensure that the approach for media engagement is integrated with that for engaging the government, legislatures and private sector
* I provide focused support to delivery teams to develop and implement their overall media engagement strategy and plans
* I actively contribute to Team-Building within the ECP team through use of shared mission, vision, values, identity/public profile, use of staff meetings, staff welfare, social events, formal and informal opportunities, etc, to reinforce teamwork. In addition, i look out for, highlight and support resolution of internal challenges impacting on team performance
* I work as part of a team, as such i maintain strong working relationships with other members of the Technical Support Team and deliver a shared approach and work plan. I provide support to other members of the team as needs arise and consult with them closely.
* I maintain close working relationships and ensure co-ordination with members of the Monitoring Evaluation and Learning and Operational support teams
* I provide support to delivery teams in a manner that respects their autonomy and the specificity of their context. I serve to add value in their eyes while facilitating learning and better ways of working.
* I maintain close working relationships and ensure co-ordination with counterparts in the other pillars of the PERL programme
* I advise delivery teams on best tactics and approaches to operationalize/deliver their work-plans and planned interventions, paying particular attention to the development of partnerships with key traditional and new media organisations and ICT platforms at the National/Federal, Regional and State levels
* I Identify and oversee external support to EC delivery teams from consultants and EC’s consortium and niche partner organisations
* I support the periodic review of progress in delivery units and adaptation of plans and capturing and reporting of results.
* I habitually monitor and promote value for money analysis and diminishing financial dependency of local partners on EC in line with EC’s broad empowerment approach. I also encourage and support all other national Core TA to do likewise.
* Ensuring complementarity and synergy of any media development work within SAVI Programme; Advocacy and Media Relations
* Advice and support to SAVI state teams on strategies for media development in line with agreed programme strategy.
* Facilitating and/or coordinating short term Technical Advisers inputs for institutional and technical capacity building with media houses in the 10 SAVI States and Abuja.
* After joining the programme, I reviewed the existing Media strategy document to capture newly devised strategies for effectively engaging and empowering the media to Improve its functionality so that it can adequately discharge its mandated role and responsibility as an agent of Voice and Accountability.
* I also played a role in reviewing the Media Organisational Capacity Assessment tool - this serves as a reflection and planning tool to foster media organisational development.
* I edited programmes scripts and news stories for weekly programmes, info-documentaries and news bulletin which I did on a daily basis for over 3 years.
* I was a regular presenter of a National Assembly weekly programme titled 'INSIDE THE SENATE' for 3 years which was aired on the National Belton Nigerian Television Authority, NTA and private media Africa Independent Television, AIT. I also took Narrations for some weekly programmes and info-documentaries.
* I had also engaged in field work for (television) info-documentary purposes in some of the following areas:
* An Info-documentary highlighting 10 years of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation Reproductive Health programming in Northern Nigeria. The field work spanned between late 2009 to early 2010.
* Coverage of 18th-21st Expert Review Committee E.R.C Meetings (btw 2009-2011) on Polio Eradication and Routine Immunisation as well as field work for production of media documentary purposes across some States in Nigeria on Nigeria's Polio eradication effort.
* I also scripted and produced 3 (three) info-documentaries on the Polio Eradication Initiative spearheaded by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) in conjunction with the Federal Government of Nigeria and other development partners to eradicate polio in Nigeria. These documentaries were aired on National Television (i.e government-owned and private)
* I was also a Producer of a Federal Ministry of Health weekly programme, titled 'HANDS ON DECK' (btw 2009-2011). The programme highlighted the Ministry's activities in the area of provision of improved healthcare service delivery in Nigeria.
* As a News Reporter I served on different beats from Defence to Youth and social development and others as assigned me and filed reports for broadcast purposes via our national service of Radio Nigeria, Kaduna which were sometimes broadcast on the Network service of Radio Nigeria.
* As a Desk Editor myy responsibility entailed editing news items sent in by reporters and correspondents across the country and putting together the vNews Bulletin for the respective news hour(s). * My job also entailed assigning reporters to cover certain news event as they occur for (news) broadcast purposes
* As a News Reporter I covered any news event/activity I was assigned to by my line manager, this involves conducting Interviews.
* As a news/programme Editor, I edited news scripts for the 7 o’clock news bulletin and weekly programme script
* I also directed the 7 0’clock news twice a week which was subject to weekly.
* As a Newscaster/Presenter, I read the 7 0’clock news 3 to 4 days a week
* I was also the Producer of a weekly programme designed to discuss topical contemporary issues in the polity. I also served as the anchor of the programme.
Given the very sensitive nature of the office in which I served, my responsibilities were limited to 'receiving and discharging of signals' from and to the various police posts within and sometimes outside the state, and any other duty as I was assigned.
