Being a pharmacist-in-charge is a job where the person has a long list of duties that should be accurately and precisely achieved. Any task must be performed extra diligently since serious health problems can arise if a mistake is made with a patient’s prescription. Responsibilities range from greeting the patients well to dispensing them the most convenient medications. In between, checking prescriptions’ details and validity, discussing and clarifying prescription coverage issues, obtaining an approval before handing-out some drugs, pricing medicines while processing insurance claims electronically and finally giving the best counseling that guarantee the most efficacy and response during treatment. Some administrative work must be carried such as stocking shelves, weekly inventory management, using computer to maintain patient’s profile and prepare the monthly chronic medication list. Besides what I mentioned above, providing the first-rate customer service is our ultimate vision, since pharmacy is one of the most humanitarian jobs in a society and our customers are those who suffer silently from diseases hinder them from living the same quality of life as before, I am very proud to be part of the medical team that wipes sufferers’ tears and give them some magical pills that hopefully ensure a healthier future.
Learning how to read prescriptions accurately in order to dispense the right medications, performing calculations to determine the dose precisely, watching carefully how to produce some extemporaneous preparations, regularly checking temperature records to assure the proper safety conditions of medications, ensuring the availability of medications via regular inventory control and maintaining a pleasant view of our little drug store. Besides these essential tasks, the pharmacist had always emphasized the significance of having the sense of empathy with patients, to understand their sickness deeply so we can provide them with the optimum health care needed.
Training in Al Sahafa pharmacy was an experience that is consistently filled with new challenges. A place where I finally start to apply the science I have learned in my Pharmacy College and link between the signs and symptoms acquired from lectures in reality. As a trainee, I had a list of tasks should be covered every week under the direction of the pharmacist, whose fortunately was the most supportive guidance in my career. Such duties as recognizing different brand names and dosage forms for the same active ingredient, being aware of the patient’s medical history and other drugs taken to avoid any possible interactions.
