Sales clerks are in charge of selling. This is different from a salesperson in that they don't have to go out into the world to look for people to sell to. The people come to the store themselves, so they likely already are planning on buying something. The sales clerk may or may not work on commission - it's more likely that they don't - and they are usually there more as a helpful guide than a salesperson. If a customer needs to know where they are going, they will ask the sales clerk for help, and the sales clerk should know the store well enough to show them exactly where everything is. Once the customer has found what they are looking for, the sales clerk will be able to help them with any questions they have. This means that the clerk should have at least a basic knowledge of all of the products for sale in the store in which they work. If this is a hardware store, they should know the function of all the tools or the uses of all the lumber. If it's a electronics store, they should know the pros and cons of all of the items for sale in the store, the reasons to buy one television over another.
