Upon admission into the college of medicine, I received a Special Honors Award for my premedical performance in the University of the Philippines. My medical education entailed 4 years total of theory and clinical application, with the first 2 years entirely dedicated to theory, the third year dedicated to theory and application (exposure to patients as well as supervised management of simple cases) and the last year dedicated to purely clinical application and so termed as junior internship. During junior internship, I was trained to possess the basic skills of a general practitioner, ranging from simple IV insertions and blood extractions to chest tube insertion in emergency cases. I assisted consultant surgeons in various operations ranging from appendectomies to Whipple's procedures. I managed patients admitted in the hospital under supervision as well as those in the outpatient department. Patient education is a core principle during my training as this largely contributes to the primary prevention of diseases in our country, which is essential in the third world setting.
The bachelor's degree in biology was my premedical course, which is a requirement in our country to allow admission into any college of medicine. During this 4-year course, I was awarded college scholarship twice in the academic year 2003-2004. In my final year, I received another award for my research on the distribution of various species of molluscs in our country.
I graduated valedictorian of the batch and was top of the class since the 3rd grade (total of 8 years).
