In my most recent position my role was to manage a project that has Riyadh City Municipality as its single client. The project provided Inspection Services, management, operation, development and maintenance of a highly developed waste management computerized system and Environmental Consultancy studies and research which is pre-dominantly waste related to Riyadh Municipality.
I managed a multi cultural and multi skilled workforce. In my advisory role to the City of Riyadh Municipality I was required to provide professional technical advice primarily in waste management but also other related environmental issues relating to waste i.e. carbon reduction and climate change. I had to learn and integrate local needs and historic cultural habits and to accommodate these into strategic planning. The strategic planning aspect involved the development of a Waste Management Plan for the city and the phased change to new methods of collection and treatment of MSW. To facilitate these proposals a waste awareness campaign has been proposed to initiate a change of habit. I provided an innovative and challenging vision for mid and long term waste management plan which included, waste collection, street sweeping (manual and mechanical), waste treatment, source segregated recycling which is significantly different from current practices. I undertook a review of current waste collection practices and made proposals for efficiency changes. Other areas of my project management included the management and development of a sophisticated computerised waste management system. I was also responsible for the supervision of the Municipality’s Cleaning contractors and their conformance to contract. This involved the monitoring and supervision of the contracts which included a total workforce of over 8000 men and over 1000 vehicles. Reporting submitted to the Municipality showing conformance to contract conditions and action plans for non conformances.

Midlothian Council is one of 32 unitary local authorities in Scotland. The Council's administrative centre is based in Dalkeith and it covers an area from the South of Edinburgh to the Scottish Borders. With an annual income of £160m it serves a population of 80, 000 with over 4000 employees.
Operations Manager - Waste Services 2004 (Feb) - 2009 (May)
My role was split on an 50:50 basis between the project management of the new Recycling Scheme and the day to day operations including,
Refuse collection,
Kerbside recycling collection,
Street cleansing,
Environmental Wardens
Public Conveniences
Transfer Station and Community Recycling Centre's
Strategic planning and data collection
• Successful strategic planning of the £31m project including collection system, recruitment, advertising and publicity campaigns and scheme rollout.
• Redevelopment of existing Civic Amenity sites and turning them into recycling centre's,
• Identification and negotiation of new contracts for recyclates net value £300k.
• Resulting in increasing recycling rate from 4.5% to over 40%.
• Reviewed and revised loss making commercial trade waste collections to break even status as required by legislation. This included the introduction of in house recycling schemes and education programmes.
• Member of PFI project team looking at waste treatment options.
Environmental Manager 2002 (June) - 2004 (Feb)
Role involved consultancy, key account management, environmental and quality control and compliance, and sales.
• Achieved highest sales ever in the chemical / hazardous waste management activities, threefold increase in profitability.
• Also rewrote the environmental system, transfer of the quality system from ISO 9002 to ISO9001-2000 and then combining it into the existing ISO 14001.
Responsible for all waste management activities in Scotland. This includes the overall management of all operations, administration, sales, health & safety and business development and key accounts.
The operational activities include dry waste collections, liquid waste tanker and special waste drum collections, industrial services, recycling initiatives and treatment plant and transfer station operations.
• Promoted to the Business Manager position in late 1999 treatment operations were then making a loss of £400k.pa. This was turned around so that it was the only plant within the group that was consistently showing profit
• Negotiated and won the Motorola waste contract for the UK 3 sites and the European site in France.
• Negotiated and managed a hazardous waste clean up valued at £750k for Astra Zenecca
General Manager 1996 (Feb) - 1996 (Dec)
Overall management of all Scottish Operations, business development and key accounts.
• Integration of the acquisition of a major competitor.
• Changed working practices and procedures to rationalize the business.
• Installed new pretreatment equipment to improve productivity.
• Gained I.P.C. Prescribed Process accreditation for one site.
Location Manager 1989 (Dec) - 1996 (Feb)
Overall responsible for the operational management of the facility, including a Hazardous Waste Treatment Plant, Hazardous Waste Transfer Station, fleet of specialist vehicles and laboratories.
• Project Manager for the design and build of the £3 million Hazardous Treatment Facility.
• Responsible for increasing turnover from £60, 000 to £2.2 million per annum in a 5 year period. Improving productivity by changing work patterns, process improvements, reduced supplier costs.
Responsible for all technical aspects of the surgical glove production process, including production quality control, process development, waste management and process troubleshooting.
• Designed, built and set up laboratory for this new operation including developing test methods and testing regime.
• Successful budgetary control of £500, 000 of raw material (chemicals),
• A member of the small project team that re-commissioned the £ 2 million plant ahead of time and budget.
