Projects completed as part of curriculum /training (1) Production of Dextran from Starch (Duration – 1 year, SRM University, Tamil Nadu, India) The objective of this study was to use starch as a cheap and alternative source to produce dextran. The starch hydrolyzing microbes as well as dextran producing bacteria, mainly Leuconostoc sp. were isolated from kitchen waste. The mixed culture of these two isolates showed the production of hydrolyzates of dextran which were confirmed by paper chromatography. The parameters like concentration of starch, pH of the medium and time of incubation influenced the quantity of the production of dextran. The protein profile was studied by Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography.
