Department of Civil Engineering Vision The Department of Civil Engineering challenge to graduate highly qualified civil engineers and technicians, and provide quality professional and community service to the country and the region. Mission The Civil Engineering mission comprises the areas of research, education and service mission. Educational Mission : Enable the leaders of tomorrow with fundamental engineering knowledge and a broad set of skills that empower them with the latest knowledge. Research Mission : Provide knowledge and tools that enable civil engineering to evolve away from informal approaches into strategies based on scientific methodologies. Service Mission : Graduate students with an appreciation for the importance of service to their professions and to their communities.Prepare not only qualified professional engineers and technicians, but also dedicated engineers and technicians of their communities who actively seek opportunities to improve the lives of those around them. FET Goals : To provide an enriching educational environment that prepares students with the civil engineering design principles and develop sustainable solutions to environmental problems and the professional skills to become leaders in their fields. Objectives To accomplish FET mission, the Civil Engineering Department tries to accomplish the following Objectives To provide an enriching educational environment that prepare the students to excel as a leader in the design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering structures. To offer a modernized curriculum including in-depth coverage in the four technical sub-disciplines of civil engineering: Geotechnical engineering, Structural engineering, Transportation engineering, and Water Resources engineering, as well as broad coverage in Computer Aided Design, Construction Management and Surveying. To engage students in creating innovative design solutions take into account economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, constructability, sustainability, and global considerations. To employ highly dedicated faculty members committed to maintaining a learner-centered environment with emphasis on student mentoring. Civil Engineering Focus Areas : The following are areas of focus within Civil Engineering at FET: Structural Engineering Aanalysis, design and construction of structures such as bridges, buildings, towers, involving the use of steel, reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete, and fiber reinforced concrete. Response of structures to earthquakes, fire resistance of structures. Transportation and Highway engineering The analysis and design of highways rail ways and road components. Assessing the traffic flow problems and provide engineering solutions Construction Engineering and Management Planning, estimating, scheduling and managing the construction of engineered facilities using modern construction methods, materials, and equipment, business and legal principles of construction contracting. Geotechnical Engineering Evaluation of soil properties and environmental conditions in foundations of earth-supported structures; mass stability in excavations and subsurface construction; use of soil characteristics and properties and soil classification in design and construction of highways, railways, airports, and other surface facilities; landslides and slope stability. Water resources and Environmental Engineering Development of surface water and ground-water resources, flood prediction and flood control, flow of contaminant transport in surface and ground waters, sanitary and environmental engineering. Civil Engineering Materials : Properties and testing civil engineering materials pertaining to infrastructure and high-performance structures, including the study of the rehabilitation materials (including bridge and pavement technology), advanced emerging materials and durability of materials. Associate degree specializations The department concentrates on graduating highly qualified technicians in quantity surveying, civil engineering and architectural engineering specializations. Outcomes The desired outcomes are that graduates of the University of BAU-FET Program demonstrates: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering within civil engineering. An ability to design and conduct experiments, and to critically analyze and interpret data. An ability to design a system, component or process to meet desired needs. An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
