Leading the environmental compliance team at Amaala, reporting to the Head of Environmental Compliance for Red Sea Global. Responsible for ensuring site environmental compliance across the Amaala site, a net zero carbon regenerative tourism development on the Red Sea coast. Ensuring environmental compliance is achieved through the leading the development and implementation of site environmental controls, management systems, plans, monitoring, reporting, inspections and auditing.
The site consists of multiple developments across different phases, all within a prestige and untouched natural environment containing coral reefs, sea grass, turtle nesting beaches, natural wadis, mangroves, and an unspoilt marine environment. As part of the Saudi Public Investment Fund and developer, Red Sea Global are focusing on regenerative tourism, with the first phase of development including a marina, yacht club, wellness centre, multiple luxury hotels, red sea marine life institute and aquarium, solar farm, and staff village.
Responsible for developing net zero carbon strategies and working on the implementation of Science Based Target Initiates (STBi) for key clients, with the aim of decarbonising their property portfolios. Key clients included investment funds, supermarket chains, hotel chains and estate management companies.
- Responsible for ensuring Msheireb and Education City Stations achieve GSAS 4 Stars for Design and Construction, together with LEED Gold (Msheireb Station only).
- Development of implementation plan and strategy to achieve compliance with contractual requirements in relation to sustainability, GSAS, and LEED.
- Management of the LEED/GSAS registration and document submission process. Liaising with appropriate certification bodies - GORD (GSAS) and USGBC (LEED).
- Management of environmental & sustainability team (5 in total) and Sub-consultants
- Development of ongoing trackers for planning route to certification.
- Development of Sustainability Management Plan for the project and regular reviews/updates
- Development and reviews of the Construction Environmental Management Plan - Contractor (CEMP-C) and author of revision submission plans, including Construction Waste Management Plan, Sewer & Waterway Contamination Plan, Energy Plan, Erosion and Sedimentation Plan, IAEQ Plan, etc
- Attendance at integrated design team meetings together with MEP, civil engineering, and architects. Working with the MEP design consultants to ensure design meets GSAS/LEED required standards and that sustainability is embedded into the design.
- Liaising with relevant departments within SOQJV to ensure sustainability is part of the normal working practice and ensuring LEED/GSAS compliance achieved. This includes regular team meetings, workshops, and presentations with teams from Procurement (e.g responsible procurement, regional selection of materials, recycled content, etc) Construction, MEP, etc.
- Working with the Design Team to identify Innovation Credits as part of the LEED process.
- Weekly meetings and regular updates (e.g. reports, presentations, etc) with Qatar Rail.
- Development of sustainability and environmental KPIs for input into monthly report.
- Managing key environmental components for the delivery of the environmental management components of the contract - including procurement of the noise and dust monitoring equipment, waste management contract, procuring noise baseline study, etc.
• Working within the Central Planning Office within the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning in Doha, Qatar, with responsibility for identifying environmental risks and improvement opportunities within infrastructure developments
• Ensuring that environmental and sustainability considerations are included within infrastructure projects from early design stages
• Maintaining that the short, medium and long term environmental aims of Qatar are achieved under the remit of ‘Keeping Doha Moving’ and in line with the Qatar National Development Strategy (2011-16), Qatar FIFA 2022 & Qatar National Vision 2030
• Review of international civil engineering assessment tools (i.e. CEEQUAL, Envision and AGIC) with the aim of implementing CEEQUAL on key Qatar projects. Currently liaising with UK CEEQUAL body with a view to developing a bespoke Qatar tool.
• Identifying sustainability opportunities within Qatar with the aim of adding value to project work. Examples of opportunities identified include the development of construction guidelines, planning guidance documents, and Qatar national waste management strategy.
• Liaising with other CPO disciplines on environmental risk - for example within the programme team, cost team and logistics team (e.g. reclamation of waste, sourcing of primary and secondary materials, movement of materials between sites, reducing traffic movements, labour camps, etc.)
• Part of the Sustainability Infrastructure Working Group including Qatar 2022, Qatar Rail, and Ashghal, with the remit of sharing information, best practice and ensuring consistency.
• Member of the Qatar Green Building Council Solid Waste Interest Group with responsibility of increasing awareness, sharing best practice and improving waste management.
• 8 years of environmental, sustainability and energy consultancy experience gained through working on a diverse range of projects across varied market sections.
• Associate Technical Director - Role included PM, bidding, provision and integration of sustainability services across Hyder’s business sectors, staff mentoring, and service development,
• Responsibility for the delivery technical project work covering projects such as sustainability strategies, sustainable building assessments (e.g. BREEAM, CfSH, EcoHomes), environmental infrastructure rating tools (e.g. CEEQUAL), developing and monitoring environmental and sustainability performance against KPIs, energy modelling, low carbon design, renewable energy assessments and feasibility studies, carbon modelling, EMS implementation, auditing, and EarthCheck certification assessments (sustainable tourism).
• Bid manager responsible for technical and fee input into environmental bids/proposals up to £1 mill. Marketing and development of new and existing sustainability services.
• UK Region EMS Manager (2005-2008) responsible for the implementation, expansion and continual improvement of ISO 14001 across 8 Hyder UK offices. EMS implementation for organisations including setting environmental monitoring, objectives & targets, creating management and operational control procedures, and training.
• Production of Hyder’s CSR report covering UK and Australia operations (06/07/08). Report developed in line with the GRI G3 guidelines and commitment to the UN’s Global Compact.
• Production of energy assessments/statements, renewable technology feasibility studies and sustainability assessments supporting master planning submissions and planning applications.
• Development of domestic and non-domestic energy assessment service offerings including simplified and dynamic building modelling software such as SAP, SBEM, IES VE, and Hevacomp

•BP - ISO14001 implementation
Project Manager and Lead Auditor for the development of a sustainability strategy for BPs 3 central London and SE based sites. This included the full implementation of ISO 14001: 2004.
• Perkins Engines (Caterpillar) - Waste Management audit and resource efficiency study.
Full waste audit of major manufacturing site with an emphasis placed on legal compliance and cost reductions, resulting in annual savings of between £100k - £150k.
• Responsible for the maintenance and improvement of ISO 14001-accredited Environmental Management System across 3 London HQ buildings employing over 3, 000 staff.
• Management of EMS expansion programme across the DTRL UK estate covering in excess of 100 properties. Auditing and implementation of corporate EMS to ISO14001 to other government departments, including Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
• Development of business cases and implementation of environmental improvement initiatives (e.g. energy saving devices) into government estate.
