a. Oversee the intellectual property unit and maintains a portfolio of current patents at the University.
b. Review invention disclosures and guide patenting decisions.
c. Investigate patent applications status, plans to commercialize inventions, the originality and novelty, to support decisions to file corresponding international patents.
d. Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations to executives; and manage the expenditure of the annual budget for the unit.
e. Liaise with law firms to review IP legal documents i.e. joint ownership, cooperative agreements, license fees and royalties …etc.
f. Assist University employees and departments to ensure compliance with university IP policies and procedures.
g. Liaise with patent attorneys in preparation, filing and prosecution of patent applications and to respond to various Office-Actions.
h. Develop, implement and maintain IP Strategy for IP applications.
i. Review the developments in IP and patent law.
j. Investigate patent utilization with the commercialization consultants on the offensive and defensive value of the protected technologies and take decisions to maintain or abandon patents.
k. Liaise with public and private technology development entities in University’s engagement with industry and technology transfer activities.
l. Coordinate and assist in the identification of industrial partners; create and maintain a resource library of collaborative opportunities to faculty/student inventors.
m. Coordinate the negotiation of industrial collaborative/partnership proposals with inventors, University Management and/or any relevant stakeholders & ensuring it is in-line with University IP policies and procedures.
n. Focus on initiative, driving innovation, and inventors services.
o. Develop and lead workshops and training initiatives to new unit staff, and to faculty/student inventors.
p. Reports to top management on the Patent filing progress and IP Commercialization status.
A. Research Management:
1. Administering the Funded Research Grants at UAE-University with coordination with the Director of Research, College Deans and the Assistant/Associate Deans for Research.
2. Providing administrative & technical support to UAEU Principle-Investigators and Researchers.
3. Coordinate with internal and external funding agencies, i.e. National Research Foundation (NRF), Emirates Foundation (EF) and Research-Industry regarding Externally Funded Research Grants. And supporting the UAEU PI’s & Researchers regarding any Admin/Tech. support they may require for their research.
4. Assisting in developing Research & Graduate Studies policies and procedures for UAE University.
5. Member of the editorial board for “The Researcher” magazine. And the Chair of the Technical Publication Committee.
6. Organizing research conferences, seminars & workshops & providing Administrative/Technical support during the events.
7. Supervising the automation of business process and workflow of internally/externally funded research projects in UAE-University via different Databases.
B. Patent & Intellectual Property Protection:
1. Managing UAEU Patents and registered Intellectual Property (IP’s) & interacting with UAEU-Inventors & the internal/external International IP Offices and the IP attorneys from patent drafting & filing until granting.
2. Handling international filing and prosecution (e.g., formalities, such as notarization and legalization procedures, and interacting with international agents).
3. Preparing formal documents and filing applications and prosecution documents with different international patent offices.
4. Following up the progress of all UAE-University cases in USA Patent Trademark Office \[USPTO\], UK Intellectual Property Office \[UKIPO\], European Patent Office \[EPO\], Patent Cooperation Treaty Applications \[PCT\], China Patent & Trademark Office, Japan Patent Office \[JPO\], GCC Patent Office \[GCCPO\], and other regional filing offices….etc.
5. Responsible for the Patents account and registered Intellectual Property (IP’s) at UAEU and coordinating between UAEU-Inventors & the International IP-Offices worldwide since 2010 (more than 43 patent filed, 115 multiple applications in different jurisdictions and about 13 patents have been granted).
C. Technology Transfer of University Patents & Intellectual Property:
1. Manage University's engagement with industry and the University's technology transfer activities.
2. Manage the negotiation of industrial partner’s proposals & ensure they are aligned with University policies and procedures with coordination with Government Technology Partners and University Commercialization Consultants.
3. Help identify technologies best commercialized by university and collaborate with appropriate technology partners from the government & public organizations and commercialization consultants.
4. Supporting the UAEU-University developed commercialization strategy for marketing UAEU registered patents and inventions. And liaise with various Commercialization Consultants overseas (for example some recent coordination with PA-Consult: USA/UK www.paconsulting.com, and ISIS-Innovation Consultant at Oxford University, UK http://isis-innovation.com, to evaluate about 20 patent applications for commercialization phase to promote the research outcomes & finding industry markets or investment.
5. Assisting in developing the UAE-University policies and procedures for Technology Transfer Office, Patent Licensing, IP ownership …etc.
D. IP and Patent Awareness Seminars:
Preparing and organizing series of seminars to enrich the IP awareness of Faculty-Member, Researchers and Senior Students (Postgraduate, Undergraduate) at UAEU.
Supervising the Research Grant Management handover process from the Vice Provost Office for Research to the corresponding 9 Colleges in a vast decentralization process to transfer the research account management from central management at Research-Affairs Sector to Colleges. This process also comprised handing over more than 300 Externally/Internally Funded Grants and Consultancy Services Contracts in addition to training the Research Coordinators and Financial Officers at Colleges on grant’s administration.
Administering all the internally/externally funded research projects in UAE-University; via different Databases \[ERMSS, GMS, MoU, MOSS'07…etc.\]
Coordinate with NRF and Emirates Foundation regarding the Externally Funded Research Grants. And supporting the UAEU PI’s & Researchers regarding any Admin/Tech. support during their research (130+ research grants).
Coordinate with internal and external customers in research related project in the university.
Define the IT purchases needs for the Office of Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, TA & NFDP programs, eFORS Offices (Abu-Dhabi, Dubai) and the Research Projects, conduct technical & financial proposals with consultancy studies based on user/business needs, prepare the tenders in coordination with the Financial Officer.
Chair of the "Technical Inspection & Delivery Committee" for VPRGS-Office requirements & supplies executed by the "Procurement Committee" of Research Affairs, and
Member of Procurement Committee in VPRGS-Office.
