HBOS Treasury (Halifax Bank of Scotland)

London, United Kingdom

November 2006 - December 2009

I joined HBOS as a member of the Summit BAU team which shares responsibilities of support and development. Summit was one of the main systems used in HBOS by front-office all the way to back-office. So my role involved plenty of interaction with all business areas, particularly front-office as Summit was used by traders to book various product types including securities, derivatives and FX. Because of this I have developed good business knowledge.

After supporting the system for a few months and getting to know the business, I started working on various small developments using C++ and Summit API. Since then, I have worked on larger developments as part of different projects. The last project I worked on was to introduce STPs to the Summit system to automate the settlement of trades. I had to develop functional workflows in C++ which did various checks on the trades to ensure they were booked ok, client validation to prevent mistakes happening in the first place, and payment messages (e.g. SWIFT).

On a day to day basis, I usually have a load of development work to go through in order of their priority as well as provide first line support by answering our support hotline and monitoring the support email inbox. The following is a brief listed summary of my responsibilities:

• Full development lifecycle (Analysis, design, development, testing, release and user-training) of new systems or extensions to Summit using advanced C++ techniques on a windows environment.
• Data extraction using SQL. Summit has a Sybase database backend, hosted on a Unix server, which we often need to extract data from as part of development or for user requests.
• Perl and batch scripting to support and enhance our intraday processes and overnight batches
• Provision of first line support to traders and other business areas, including the creation of custom OTC trades, ad-hoc reports, automating processes and assisting with identification of P&L discrepancies.
