SCADA/Telecommunication Engineer. at Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC).
  • United Arab Emirates - Abu Dhabi
  • My current job since April 2004

• Design, supervising, commissioning, attending SAT and do maintenance for GSM/GPRS/3G/WiFi, Fiber cables, Lease Line Modems and DLC telecom systems at the distribution management project (DMS) in the ADDC company.
• We started the DMS project, followed the installations, witnessed the tests, got the training on different equipments and then trained the new stuff; I take the senior and sometimes head responsibilities.
• Diagnosing of SDH problems: Synchronization problem of SDH which affected the E1 interface cards such as 4-wires NEMCA and LAWA4 cards causing jittering and then frequently disconnection.
• Diagnosing of Ethernet/TCP/IP problems: By using wireshark protocol analyzer, I traced the link between the MOXA optical switch and LAWA4 card and discovered the MTU incompatibility between them causing disconnection on high data traffic.
• Telecom design: Our SDH interfaces based on 4-wire analogue cards with all of its problems of complicated MDF wiring and huge numbers of lease line modems; I introduced to ADDC the design of Ethernet over SDH and direct optical switches which is more simplified, robust and trusted.
• Excellent understanding of different telecom protocols: Our master station SCADA system is Siemens Spectrum (IEC104) which is limited in interfacing with IEC101 protocol; I introduced the design to connect IEC101 SCMS stations over GPRS to the master station.
• Creative solutions when it is not available in the local market: I wrote macro under freeware Tera terminal software to measure the BER (bit error rate) & RTTL (round trip time delay) for serial modem links.
• Tendering & specifications: Our telecom tenders were built on lump sum basis which causing huge money losses for the company as we have different communication designs for each project which may vary from simple wireless (GPRS, WiFi) to optical switches (few thousands to millions of Dirhams). I re-wrote the tender specifications and scope of work based on different telecom designs and added a detailed breakdown prices for each design which saved millions of Dirhams.
• ADDC competency certificate holder, receive and clear LAP permits in ADDC SS and primaries for work related to SCADA and communication equipments.
• Applying HSE rules at site and supervising the contractor accordingly.
• Design and diagnostics of new SCADA systems.
• Installing new communication equipments such as wireless, lease line modems and optical switches.
• Testing new fiber optic cables according to latest standards.
• Maintaining communication equipments of SDH, DLC, Ethernet, GSM and WiFi networks over different communication media such as fiber, pilot cables, leased line and wireless.
• Follow-up the execution of the project as a whole according to the contract, specifications, and standards.
• Revising the project design and drawings.
• Writing technical reports and follow-up the project execution progress in coordination with other departments in the utility.
• Attending inspection for the communication equipment and fiber cables in the country of origin.
