Cold chain officer at Kwara State Ministry of Health
  • Nigeria
  • January 2009 to September 2011

• All vaccinators are responsible for ensuring the vaccines they administer have been correctly stored.
• All immunization providers/clinics storing vaccines must use a pharmaceutical refrigerator.
• All immunization providers/clinics must have an electronic temperature recording device (eg, data logger) that records and downloads data from the previous month.
• All providers/clinics who store vaccines and/or offer immunization services must achieve CCA, including (but not limited to) general practices, public health units, community pharmacies, travel clinics, emergency medical services, occupational health services, research units and hospital wards/clinics/departments/pharmacies.
• The process of achieving CCA is a quality audit tool and a remedial plan is able to be put in place while the provider/clinic meets the requirements. The provider/clinic is still able to administer vaccines while this remedial plan is being achieved.
• Each immunization provider/clinic must have a written cold chain management policy and allocate overall responsibility for cold chain management (including temperature monitoring) to a designated person(s).
• Immunizations providers/clinics must annually review and update their cold chain management policy.
• The vaccine refrigerator temperatures must be monitored and recorded on a daily basis. The data loggers should be reviewed in accordance with the National Guidelines for Vaccine Storage and Distribution. This includes all vaccine refrigerators storing vaccines in hospital departments, public health units and when vaccines are being transported for school, workplace or at home immunization.
• This resource illustrates effective vaccine cold chain management and what to do if a pharmaceutical refrigerator temperature is less or more than the +2˚C and +8˚C range.
