Erasmus Mundus Scholarship £30000 Efficiently Monitoring Hypervisor Based Virtual Environment This project reviews state of the art in the field of VM monitoring. The monitoring characteristics of different VM environment including Xen, Vmware, Hyper-V are discussed. Capabilities for existing hypervisor based monitoring tools and libraries (e.g libvirt, xenman, NetIQ) are mentioned. GridRM is an extensible, wide-area, monitoring system that specialises in combining data from existing agents and monitoring systems so that a consistent view of the underlying resources and services can be achieved, regardless of heterogeneity. This project proposed a design model which extends the GridRM capabilities for hypervisor-based environments. A prototype is implemented as a proof of concepts.
Abstract of MS Thesis The growth of the information on the web is increasing at a stunning pace. Users experience information starvation in finding relevant information. Update monitoring using continual queries is a promising area of research where user can find right information at the right time, instead of manual browsing or repeated submission of queries. Grouping optimizes the evaluation of continual queries by executing common operations in a group of queries just once. This supports a large number of continual queries in a large scale environment of the Internet. Moreover, the information on the web is in semi-structured form. XML is the principal medium for data exchange on the web for semi-structured data. Continual queries groups are dynamic because they are changing as new queries are added and old queries are deleted from them. Group’s results are required to be stored on the CQ server until the execution of all the queries in the group, are performed in order to avoid the loss of critical information. However, this practice proliferate the versions of the group’s results on the server. Consequently the storage consumption increases and retrieval of a query results become difficult on the CQ server. Managing multiple versions of semi structured data for dynamically grouped continual queries is the issue of this research. We have proposed an indexing and pointing technique to reduce the version proliferation of grouped queries’ results. In this technique data is stored only once for each node of the XML tree and pointed by multiple updates of the multiple continual queries. The evaluation of the proposed model for the data storage is optimal in terms of retrieval time and storage consumption.
