As Assistant Resident Engineer - Roads, responsible to Report to the RE (Roads)/ SRE and assisted by the roads inspectors & Highways surveyors. Assist in checking the contractor’s submissions (Method statements, ITP, etc.) and shop drawings. Assist in responding to the contractor’s requests for information. Liaise with the inspectors, surveyors and materials inspectors with regard to the timely processing of the requests for inspection (RFI) to ensure there are no undue delays. Liaise with the ARE (Utilities) to ensure that there are no programming conflicts with utility diversions. Assist the Planning Engineer to prepare the monthly status reports. Issuing of SOR/ NCR for non-conformance of works and do follow-up to attend the same.

Position : Highway Construction Engineer

Upgrading of The Bariadi - Lamadi Road project involves construction of 71.8 km long dual lane highway with 3 No. major bridges through rolling terrain countryside. Particular challenges on this project include the land acquisition at towns/village areas along the project and remote place. The project is being constructed by the Chinese Contractor CCCC Ltd.

My role as Highway Construction Engineer covered following responsibility:
• Assisting Resident Engineer in coordination of all project activities,
• supervision of road works in all stages, particularly pavement construction (Pavement layers Consist of 20/10mm Double Surface Dressing, 200mm CRR Aggregates Base Course, 150mm C1 Cement Stabilized Sub-base layer, Earthwork - G15, G - 7, G - 3.)
• check and ensure quality control as per procedures of quality control plan,
• check the plant & equipment and suitability of supply to the work in hand,
• review working drawings for construction and recommend for approval,
• assist RE liaising with authorities concerned on proposed relocation of services through Employer,
• recommend to RE the revision of plans and specifications as necessary,
• ensure contractor to follow safe working practices in all operations which affect the safety of personnel, works, adjacent property and health care of the workers,
• ensure minimum impediment to flow of traffic during construction,
• check and verify measurement of payment certificates,
• assist in periodic review of contractor’s resources and work programme,
• assist in preparation of various progress report dealing with technical and administrative matters,
• maintain daily site diary and project records,
• monitor and delegate the related works to the field inspectors and Quantity Surveyor,
• coordinate closely with Material Engineer and Topographical Surveyor,
• assist RE in implementation of necessary mitigation/improvement measures for environmental protection, resettlement action plan

The Haizelden Drive to Sir Lowry’s Pass Road upgrading project involved the widening of 7.2 Km of Trunk/ National Route No 2 through rolling terrain. Particular challenges on this project included; maintaining large existing traffic volume (ADT 25000+) during execution/construction, ensuring that Somerset West City’s drainage system was kept intact, and the lack of bitumen throughout the Western Cape region. The project was constructed under two contract packages, and my role as Assistant Resident Engineer covered single package for first 3.2 Km."
Pavement layers Consisted of 50mm Bituminous Concrete, 200mm G-1 Aggregates Base Course, 250mm C2 Cement Stabilized Sub-Base layer, Earthwork - G - 7. Road furniture: NJC Crash Barriers, Road Studs, street lights, Kerbing, Road Markings, Road Signs.


Construction Supervision for the Upgrading of 14.2 Km of National Route 2, Section 9: Tsitsikamma to Witelbos, Eastern Cape, Coastal belt, South Africa.

Period : June 2007 to Nov 2008
Client : South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL)

Position : Assistant Resident Engineer (Roads)

The Tsitsikamma - Witelbos Road upgrading project involved the widening & realigned of 14.2km of national route No 2 through indigenous forest countryside. Particular challenges on this project included; the land topography, water logging at downside of the mountain and an environmentally sensitive forest section.

In high fills (in forest section), reinforced earth retaining walls were provided due to constraint of available area. The project was constructed under single contract package, and my role as Assistant Resident Engineer covered: coordination, liaising with statutory authorities, client and contractor, monitoring inspectors of works for the day to day supervision, monitoring quality control of field activities, review the construction drawings for levels etc., assisting RE in certification of works, reporting to CARE and Resident Engineer about the unsafe practices on site, if any. Writing draft minutes of meetings, etc.

Project Engineer (Highways) at M/s RITES Ltd, (A Govt. of India Enterprises)

The Delhi - Gurgaon Expressway upgrading project involved the widening of 27.7km of national highway no 8 (8/6 lanes with service lane both side) through City. Particular challenges on this project included maintaining the existing traffic (ADT 150 000+) and 11 flyovers, grade separators. Reinforced earth retaining walls at every approach have been provided, 32 lanes toll plazas with concrete pavement were constructed. The project was constructed under two contract packages, and my role as Highway/Material Engineer covered only BOT package.

As Highway/Material Engineer, I was responsible for;
• quality checking and auditing the civil works of different items of highways execution,
• structural works,
• drafting NCR on finding sub-standard works being executed,
• utilities shifting and reconstruction,
• witnessing various tests & trials,
• quality of materials,
• conducting Mix design of BC (CRMB 60), DBM (60/70), PQC(M-45), different grades of structural concrete as per the relevant IS and IRC standards
• reporting to Dy. Team Leader of the Independent Consultant.

Responsibility also included Field Testing, estimation of quantities of earth work, pavement layers and other protective works, checked measurement of completed works, and assisted the Assistant Resident Engineer and Quantity Surveyor in the measurement and recording of the works, preparation of monthly progress report and project completion report, maintaining programme and progress records as required by the Resident Engineer and Team Leader. Co-ordinating the Technical Audit Team appointed by the Employer, under the guidance of ARE, RE, ME and Team Leader. Responsibility also included Laboratory Testing of all material (i.e. soil, granular material, aggregates, Bitumen, Job mix design, etc.)
