Major duties and responsibilities:

-Patient care and endorsement, as well as nursing rounds for assessment of patient care. Recording of activities done by shift. Charting nursing actions done in the span of your shift and updating the medication charts for the patient and or addition of medication as prescribed by physician.
-Monitoring of patients vital signs. Usually done 3 times per shift for every patient unless otherwise indicated in doctors’ orders for special monitoring (i.e every hour/2 hours, or once every shift )
-Insertion of patients’ intravenous fluid line and making sure it is patent. Drawing of blood sample for routine tests. (i.e. blood typing, hBsag, ABO typing etc.)
-Carrying out of Doctors orders. Providing the data needed for every doctors round, implementation of orders within scope of practice and proper documentation of nursing action on patients’ chart.
-Checking of patients’ medication stock for inventory, and medication preparation. Giving of medications as prescribed by the physician and after proper observance of the ten rights to giving patients medications
-Discharge instruction explanation. Done after patients physician says patient is in the clear and/or upon request of the patient to stay at home against medical advice (HAMA).
-Reminding of follow-up check-up. Reiterating the importance of the patients follow up after patient has been given/ordered discharge instruction.
-Patient transport to different facility. Be it for CT scan or transfer to a different institution. We stay with the patient in the ambulance just in case of any medical emergency.
-Conducting of ward classes once a month such as proper hygiene and nutrition or depending on the area of assignment. Providing of information and answering questions related to the topic within the scope of our practice
-Work in collaboration with other health care members such as the doctors, midwives, technicians and other nurses. Discussion of nursing care plan with the health care team and select the best choices on implementation of care plans.
-Prioritization and providing immediate patient care during emergencies (i.e CPR, oxygenation and giving of emergency medications as prescribed by physician)
-Informing proper channel in cases when patient is responsive or allergic to certain types of procedure or medication prescribed/ordered by the physician.
-Maintaining the confidentiality of the patients’ information from unauthorized personnel.
-Providing education for patients with special examination or pre -procedure education (i.e exams that require fasting). Providing support for patients’ pre and post-surgery. Answering questions about the procedure and giving them information about what they want to know before and after their surgery, as well as careful monitoring of patients pre and post-surgery
-Proper counting of instruments, gauze, sponges or other objects inside the patient before surgeons close the wound. Proper cleaning, disinfecting, and autoclaving of instruments and disposing of gauzes, sponges and other disposables on proper waste disposal
-Make sure all equipment, medications and instruments are all available in the crash cart
-Checking of oxygen tanks, humidifiers and intravenous fluids and line before, during and after shift.

-Health assessment of school staff and students. For students, taking individual health history for newcomers and transferees, or updating school health records every first quarter of the new school year
-Developing of nursing care plans for students who enter the clinic with ailment complaints
-Providing first aid to any wounds or injuries and referring to the hospital if the situation calls for
-Giving of over the counter medications for minor ailments after thorough assessment

-Reporting thru proper channels/ chain of communication if any of the student or staff may need further care or transfer to the hospital.
