I have always been interested in English linguistics and textual analysis. The topic suggested by my supervisor led me into computational stylometry, which applies mathematical and statistical methods to characterisation of literary style, and which can be used in areas such as authorship attribution. Specifically, my PhD research set out to resolve the existing debate on the authorship of the anonymous 1821 translation of Goethe’s Faustus with reference to nine candidate authors using data abstracted from a very large corpus of their respective writings and applying varieties of cluster analysis. The result was that stylometric analysis does not support the controversial claim that Coleridge was the author of the translation, and that John Anster is the probable author
