Physics Teacher and Higher Education Advisor: My teaching covered the whole range of secondary school science, from grade 7 Science to Higher Level IB Physics. As the Higher Education Advisor, I was responsible for advising students about their Higher Education options, organizing the required school documents, liaising with parents and universities, uploading and submitting documents onto online application websites.
Physics Teacher: I was employed as a Physics/Science teacher. My teaching covered the whole range of secondary school science, from 1st year Science to 6th year (Advanced Higher) Physics classes. I took an active part in discussions about the delivery and assessment of the Science curriculum and related matters during Departmental Meetings.
Research Fellow in the School of Electronics and Physical Sciences: I performed research on a number of projects, including; reactive ion etching of quartz as a waveguide fabrication technique, the reactive ion etching of laser annealed silicon as a possible electron field emission source, and electron field emission from carbon nanotubes. In addition, in partnership with a colleague, I developed a novel system and associated techniques for the three dimensional manipulation and interconnection of individual carbon nanotubes for bespoke nanodevice fabrication. I also designed (with AutoCAD) prototyping substrates to test the viability of CNT devices. I presented aspects of my research at in-house, national and international conferences using oral, poster and PowerPoint presentations and published associated papers in academic journals. During this time, the School had the highest possible research rating (5*). I hold, along with the other inventors, two patents based on the carbon nanotube work. I was also responsible for assisting PhD students with the practical aspects of their electron field emission research.
I studied Physics and Science teaching topics, including subject knowledge, experimental work and lesson planning. General teaching lectures and tutorials/workshops covered areas such as behavior management, and literacy and numeracy. In addition, I studied ICT as a teaching resource, including webpage design and using interactive whiteboards.
PhD in ‘Electron Field Emission from Amorphous Semiconductor thin films’ My research involved testing the electron field emission properties of amorphous semiconductor thin films as a flat panel display technology. The work involved the design, construction and operation of the testing equipment (mechanical, electrical and programming). Relevant theories that may have been able to describe the processes were studied. In addition, I developed a new model (in collaboration with NTU, Singapore) that successfully explained the observed experimental results.
BSc (hons) 2:1 Theoretical Physics Topics studied included Quantum Mechanics, Laboratory Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Astrophysics and General Relativity.
