Maintained a small private legal practice. Researched legal issues and advised clients on a variety of legal issues including: alternative dispute resolution, contracts, negotiations, intellectual property, criminal law, constitutional issues, and veterans' law.
Assisted veterans with an assortment of legal issues, usually in regards to federal veterans benefits. Interviewed approximately 200-250 prospective clients and wrote memos advising proposed action plans for cases. Prepared briefs, motions, client advice letters, wills, affidavits, certificates of service, and a counter designation of record in a 59 year old case. Constructed client database program to track and manage all clinic case files.
Researched the feasibility of establishing a pro bono legal aid clinic for adoption assistance. Authored a detailed memo laying out the evidence and arguments in support of a clinic and proposed areas of practice.
ACTIVITIES Federalist Society President, UDM Law Chapter (May 2008 – May2009) · Organized and hosted speaking engagements with prominent judges, law professors, and legal commentators. Topics have included the Heller decision, the Federalist Papers, election law, textualism, and the battle over the courts. Placed in the top twenty percent of all chapters across the nation and named a “top tier” chapter by the national office due to frequency of events held. Student Bar Association Secretary-Treasurer, 3L Day (April 2008 – May 2009) · Served on the Elections Committee and Financial Committee. Monitored student elections and approved financial requests from student organizations. Demonstrated leadership by campaigning against fiscal irresponsibility and frequently voted against reckless spending. Interviewed and evaluated prospective faculty members. Praised in writing by the Executive Board for distinguished leadership, hard work, and commitment. In Brief Staff Member (October 2008 – May 2009) · Contributed monthly articles on political and legal issues ranging from 300-1200 words for publishing in the student newspaper. · Articles published include: What is the Federalist Society?, October 2008; The Never Ending Presidential Campaign: Or How I Learned to Love Political Humor (lead article), November 2008; Why McCain Lost the Election, December 2008; Burning Away Freedom: How Michigan’s Proposed Smoking Ban Threatens Economic and Personal Liberty, January 2009; An Unstimulating Prospect: Opposing the Obama Stimulus Package, February 2009; Where Conservatism Went Wrong and How to Redeem It, March 2009.
