Research Assisstant at TGR Biosciences Pty Ltd
  • Australia
  • March 2009 to July 2015

Tasks, Responsibilities and Skills:
• Performing high throughput assays. TGR has developed its own high throughput assay technology called SureFire which involves handling very small volumes.
• Performing lower throughput assays. TGR has developed its own single step ELISA assay which involves handling larger assay volumes.
• Performing standard laboratory assays, such as ELISA and Western Blots.
• Quality Control testing of reagents made in house using the above techniques. In Quality Control testing I developed skills in following standard procedures and understand the importance of precise and accurate pipetting and assay handling to ensure quality and reliable results.
• Using the above assay techniques combined with antibody handling to perform other experiments such as antibody titrations for assay development and troubleshooting.
• Handling and maintaining animal cell lines and tissue culture. This involves using appropriate aseptic techniques in a biological safety cabinet to ensure personal safety and the integrity of the cell cultures.
• Cell culture handling involves preparing media solutions, handling the cells for cell number counts and using the cells for experiments and lysate preparations. It also involves the proper maintenance of the cell culture area ensuring a clean and organised work space.

• Solution and buffer preparation. Which involves calculations to determine quantities of ingredients for the solutions, weighing and measuring ingredients, and ensuring solutions are properly mixed and homogeneous.
• General laboratory maintenance and equipment testing. This includes ensuring laboratory benches are clean and organised, laboratory dish ware cleaned appropriately, equipment is clean and well maintained with regular services and calibrating and cleaning of pipettes.
• Appropriate laboratory record keeping, including maintaining up to date laboratory books.
• Data analysis of experimental work, including tabulating and graphic raw data and making detailed and knowledgeable observations and conclusions.
• Assisting the Quality Assurance Manager with ensuring Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Control procedure worksheets reflect current practices.
