As a nurse within the public health care system in Zimbabwe, I have had the opportunity to work in different hospital departments that have included care for mental health patients, particularly geriatric patients suffering from a range of neurological health issues such as dementia, alzheimer's as well as parkinsonism. Working in this department in the past 2 years has afforded me invaluable experience with the long term care / end-of-life care skills such as activities of daily living, ordering and feeding of patients, patient grooming, promoting mobility, incontinence care, bedside assistance, administration of enteral and parenteral medicines, monitoring of patient's vitals and intravenous fluids, and patient safeguarding to mention but a few.
