The project entails construction of a fuel depot comprising 12 tanks.
Group Five is the principal contractor and our client is Transnet. The project name is "NMPP Inland Terminal 2"
I am responsible for the Health and Safety for all the Business Units, including Buildings, Civils, Mechanical, Piping and E&I.
All the safety leads and their safety officers on the project report to me. The job is challenging yet exciting. It is just unfortunate that the project is nearing completion and I need to move on to the next project. before I move on I would like to complete the project handover and document archiving.
Protech Khuthele was predominantly a Bulk Earthworks organisation. The projects we were awarded included Road Works, Civils Works, underground service installations, Topsoil Removal in opencast mining at BHP Billiton, Xstrata, Exxaro. Other clients included Sasol, Anglo/Kumba and Eskom.
My role was to get involved from the planning and tender phase, attend the clarification meetings. It was also my responsibility to employ and select the safety officers for the various projects.
I was responsible to build the safety system for the project and hand it to the responsible safety officer to implement.
We had multiple projects running at the same time and I would conduct site visits, as well as internal HSE compliance audits. I had the assistance of an office bound safety administrator. It was important for me to network with clients as well as sub contractors in order to maintain healthy working relationships.
Performance management and career development was a crucial part of my job scope. I was also required to compile and submit weekly and monthly safety reports to the company's Exco. My job required extensive travel as the company projects were spread across the country.
Our grading system is different to the above ratings so I've entered 4-Point to get through the registration process. My post high school education includes a Safety Management Certificate, ISO9001, ISO14001, OHSAS18001 training, as well as Combined ISO14001 & OHSAS18001 Internal Auditors Training - All attended at an institution called NOSA. I also have a Management Development Diploma through Damelin.
