Project:
Design, Optimization and Retrofit of Divided Wall Distillation Column by using Aspen HYSYS

1) Development of Steady State Simulation Model of Three & Four products Divided wall Distillation Column (new multicomponent distillation technique) using Aspen HYSYS and UniSim.
2) Development of the Design structure of Three product Divided wall Distillation Column based on Rigorous Simulation studies.
3) Optimization of the Divided wall Distillation Column to obtain optimal design parameters based on minimum Reboiler Duty.
4) Performed Economic evaluation of the Divided wall Distillation Column based on minimum Energy consumption and compared it with conventional distillation column schemes.
5) Involved in designing the distillation column experiment, contacted vendors for purchasing equipment’s, mounting the columns in lab, run and test the lab scale distillation column.

This project is funded by King Abdul-Aziz City for Science & Technology (KACST) Saudi Arabia and it is completed in October 2015. In this project, I worked on development of rigorous steady state simulation of Divided Wall Distillation Column and then optimization of the operation of Divided Wall Column on the basis of minimum energy consumption by using Aspen HYSYS. In the last part, I worked on retrofitting of the conventional multicomponent distillation column to new Divided Wall Column without any major modification in the existing distillation column. After rigorous simulation and optimization, results are very promising. Results of this research shows that by using Divided wall column for multicomponent distillation purposes, we can save 30% of energy consumption and capital cost as compared to conventional distillation column.

1) Engineering calculations: Mass and Energy balances, Equipment Sizing calculations (Distillation column, Heat Exchangers etc.), Pump Evaluation, Pressure drop calculations of Heat Exchangers, efficiency of Condensers, Heaters and Pumps.
2) Process Design and Detail Engineering including performing process simulations, Process optimization, sizing & selection of equipment’s etc.
3) Preparation/ review of PFD’s, P&ID’s, BFD’s, Engineering Flow Diagrams, Process Data Sheets, Project specific specifications, design calculations/ analysis, Procurement specifications.
4) Process Design studies using Process Simulation Software ASPEN HYSYS, ASPEN PLUS, UniSim.
5) Process documentations: Process descriptions, maintaining data sheets and log sheets, to keep up to date SOPs, P & IDs and Line designation tables (LDTS).
6) Estimation/ engineering work related to bids.
7) Improvement of energy efficiency by Energy audits, Process optimization, Process and utility integration and equipment modification.
8) Improvement of Production processes, process safety and product quality.
9) Continuous Support to Technical team in Future Projects and Developments.
10) To participate in activities associated with equipment and material procurement, permitting, and subcontracting.
11) Responsible of reviewing projects and providing comments to improve designs and ensure optimum designs with the lowest cost possible.
12) To perform and check calculations, specify equipment, and solve problems of complex engineering problems.
13) Study, evaluate and propose modification and upgrading of equipment to improve production processes and increase the reliability of the plant operating system.
14) Study of process hazard analysis (HAZOP) of plant.
15) To perform economic evaluation, support studies and activities related to process safety and environment.
16) To deliver technical training sessions to trainee engineers.
17) Review of plant performance through material and energy balance, cost calculations and simulation studies. Review and modification of the plant operating logics and equipment revamps in accordance with HAZOP studies.
18) Process optimization and to conduct safety and environmental evaluation of projects.
19) To perform economic evaluation, support studies and activities related to process safety and environment
