AUB: Final Year Project Subject: Sustainable Floriculture Landscapes, Reviving Rural Culture in Gaboun Location: Gaboun Village, Lebanon Brief Description: - The aim of the project was to provide a sustainable livelihood for villagers while preserving the existing Mediterranean rural character and environment, which is being jeopardized by the invasive plastic greenhouses that house the current floriculture activities. That was achieved through outdoor floriculture that goes along with the existing landscape, and through several ecological tourism activities and features that would preserve and celebrate the natural heritage of Gaboun. The main actors and stakeholders in this project are the municipality as a master planner, and the farmers or land owners that are mostly locals forming a floriculture cooperation that would control all the operations. The site consists of privately owned land parcels with an overall area of 2.63 km2 including agricultural terraces, abandoned terraces, maquis areas, cliff landscapes, and watercourse and river ecotypes. - The main input was to create a new masterplan for the northern part of the village in order to prevent the spread of indoor floriculture and therefore produce a model of a sustainable floriculture project that protects and celebrates the existing landscape. Further to the masterplan, typical design details that would prevent negative implications on the existing site were suggested with an emphasis on showcasing the actual natural features and opportunities over the site by designing specific spaces in such spots.
