I had been seconded to Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation Limited (SMEC), in association with Lahmeyer International GmbH (LI), by the Dams Implementation Unit (DIU) for the construction supervision of the Rosaries Dam Heightening Project (RDHP).

The first stage of the Dam was constructed between1960 and 1966 for a full supply level of 482.0m with the intention of later rising by additional 10m. With the heightening the reservoir will be increased from 3, 000 million m 3 to 7, 400 million m 3 of storage volume, which will be used for irrigation of approx.1 million ha of farmland and generation of hydro-electric power.

The heightening project was started by the contractor CCMD-Joint Venture (Chinese Consortium) in May 2008. The design, project management and construction supervision is executed by SMEC (Australia) and LI (Germany). The project construction period is about four years and its value is about USD 400 Million for civil works and mechanical and electrical works required for maintaining the operation. The civil works consist of Heightening of the concrete dam (total volume 155 thousand m3) and Heightening and extending of the earth fill embankment dam on the east bank (length 8.5 km) and on the west bank (length 15 km) with total filling volume of about 17 million m3

Main Responsibilities:

•Supervision of trial embankment fillings, construction and testing.
•Supervision, monitoring, and controlling of the embankment dam construction activities (such as foundation excavation, foundation treatment, and filling of clay core, clean sand filters, as raised river gravel filters, crushed- screening gravel in drain zones, and rock as rip-rap) compare to progress to the project time schedule, contributing to the quality management and cost management.
• Participating in the weekly site meeting that focused on quality and progress.
• Contributing to the regularly progress reports for the embankment dam construction.
