Research Scientist at STS Defence Limited
  • United Kingdom - London
  • My current job since March 2015

At this position, I am leading a research and development team in machine learning and real-time signal processing. I am the technical lead and provide technical advice to other teams and internal partners on projects related to machine learning and real-time signal processing. I organize cross-team activities such as internal and external seminars, and all-hands discussions on algorithms.

On day-day basis, I am responsible for:

- Applying data mining, anomaly detection, and machine learning to enhance prediction and diagnosis of faults within diesel engine.
- Working in lock steps with production managers, engineers, and software engineers for implementing machine learning in real-time.
- Development of novel algorithms for feature extraction from the underlying data
- Performing data analysis to generate customer-specific business insights from Cloud applications
- Evaluating different algorithmic approaches to solve various machine learning and prediction use cases.
- Architecting, test, tune and deploy algorithms into production

Research Engineer at Printed Motor Works Limited
  • United Kingdom
  • December 2013 to February 2015

- Provided research leadership in a team that designed and developed real-time fault-detection machine learning algorithm for next generation in-wheel motors.

- Provided data analytics, using advanced statistical and machine learning models, to mechanical engineering team for possible design shortcomings.

- Architected and implemented analytics and visualisation components for device data analysis platform to predict hardware

- Optimised factors for sales conversions and designed a support algorithm for company’s technical support portal.

- Developed current waveform extension models relying on decision trees, random forest, logistic regression and support vector machine.

Research Assistant at Centre of Excellence in FPGA / ASIC Research
  • Pakistan - Islamabad
  • June 2009 to January 2011

Worked as Research Assistant on project of “Design and Verification of Low-Power, High-Speed IP Suite for Universal Serial Bus (USB 3.0)”. Assisted other team members in writing research proposals and documentation of product specifications. Promoted as Junior Team Lead of a student’s group working on “Power Line Communication”. Worked on design and development of various commercial level control systems.

Job Responsibilities:
- To write C/C++ codes for DSP implementations, various microcontrollers and processors. Optimization for fast performance by reading assembly code.
- To understand specification and interface design of FPGAs, ensuring reliable interfaces under all appropriate conditions.
- Responsible for Debugging product, testing and resolve FPGA designs and interfaces on hardware for production releases using Board testing and lab equipment such as Logic Analysers and high speed oscilloscopes.
- To write reliable and efficient Verilog code for simulation and synthesis, mainly for Xilinx FPGAs. High awareness of device targeting in source code. Careful and secure clock domain crossings.
- To experiment algorithm modelling using Matlab/Simulink and to convert models in RTL verilog implementation for both ASIC and FPGA.

Achievements and Selected Outcomes:
- Development and implementation of efficient algorithms for CRC-5, CRC-16 and CRC-32, timer and DMA of Universal Serial Bus 3.0.
- Design and development of OFDM (Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) architecture for Power line Communication- MATLAB simulations and FPGA implementation through Verilog HDL.
- Development of research proposals for funding of power line communication project.
- Various other commercial level projects e.g. Automatic Geyser Control, digital electricity meter, etc.
