Building Design - Mechanical, Electrical, and Low Voltage (ELV) Systems
This is a comprehensive undertaking, requiring expertise across various engineering disciplines. Here's a breakdown of the process and resources to get you started:
Design Phases:
1. Concept Design & Client Coordination:
o Discuss building layout, functionality, and client preferences.
o Develop initial system concepts for HVAC, Firefighting, Plumbing, Electrical, Fire Alarm, ELV, Oil Interceptor, and Sewerage Treatment.
2. Detailed Engineering:
o HVAC:
 Chilled Water System: Size chilled water pipes based on building heat load calculations. Select air duct types (flexible, rigid) based on space constraints and efficiency. Choose a chiller type (centrifugal, screw) considering capacity and noise limitations. Evaluate split and cassette-type AC units based on room size and aesthetics.
 Use resources like ASHRAE
o Firefighting:
 Perform hydraulic calculations to determine pipe sizes and pump requirements for sprinkler systems. Select pump types (centrifugal, positive displacement) based on pressure and flow needs. Choose fire protection systems (sprinklers, water mist) based on hazard levels in different building zones.
 Refer to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
o Plumbing:
 Size pipes using fixture unit method based on the number and type of plumbing fixtures (sinks, toilets) planned. Adhere to International Plumbing Code (IPC) guidelines for material selection and installation practices.
o Electrical:
 Estimate electrical loads for lighting, power, and equipment based on building use and occupancy. Design the electrical distribution system, including panels, transformers, and switchgear.
o Fire Alarm & ELV Systems:
 Design a fire alarm system complying with local fire codes, including detectors, control panels, and notification devices.
 Design ELV systems for communication (telephone, data), security (CCTV), and access control based on client needs.
o Oil Interceptor & Sewerage Treatment:
 Size and design oil interceptor to separate oil and grease from wastewater before discharge to the sewer system.
 Design a wastewater treatment plant suitable for treating factory effluent to meet local environmental regulations.
3. Building Information Modeling (BIM):
o Use BIM software to create IFC drawings for the client. These 3D models will improve coordination between disciplines and facilitate clash detection.
4. Project Management:
o Participate in tender meetings with specialists and the main contractor.
o Attend technical meetings with the client to discuss design details.
o Oversee the work of the supervision team during construction.
o Respond to Requests for Information (RFI) from contractors regarding technical aspects.
o Prepare a Bill of Quantities (BOQ) to estimate project costs for materials and labor.

Education

Bachelor's degree, Mechanical Power Engineer
  • at Helwan University
  • January 2008

• Apply principles of physics, mathematics, and material science to design, analyze, and manufacture mechanical systems and devices. • Work in a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, and robotics. • Conduct feasibility studies, design, and evaluate mechanical systems and components, prepare and present project proposals and reports, create detailed manufacturing and installation plans, analyze test results, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. • Design, build and test thermal and mechanical devices. • Research, design and develop machinery and systems for heating, ventilating and air conditioning, power generation, transportation, processing, and manufacturing. They also perform duties related to the evaluation, installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems. through my studies, I worked in TV Egypt for 10 years for the facility building Electrical and ELV systems.
