Trainee Quantity Surveyor at Alfred McAlpine Business Services
  • United Kingdom
  • January 2007 to February 2008

Joining Alfred McAlpine Business Services as a trainee Quantity Surveyor gave me the opportunity to develop my knowledge and understanding through working with an experienced Quantity Surveyor in a busy environment. The company gave me an excellent opportunity to choose and complete a Degree in Quantity Surveying. My chosen course was at Nottingham Trent University on a day release basis. I was tasked with creating a presentation for 10 different MOD sites to explain the pricing process and document management procedure. Located in the Northern region working across a number of sites, my tasks mainly involved;
• Pricing Minor Works, overseeing the submission and authorisation process in line with business delegation levels
• Presentation and negotiation of price submissions with the client
• Maintaining project registers
• Production of monthly reports to Commercial, Operations and Finance Managers
• Lead the claim for Abortive Costs in the North region (£900K)
• Monitor trends in budget vs actual cost over the injected works programme, and core services contract

Project Assistant at Urban Residential Development and Investment
  • United Kingdom
  • December 2005 to April 2006

Although only a temporary position working for URDI gave me taste of working alongside various Snr Management roles with an ambitious private property development firm based in Grantham. During my short spell I worked on a 54 bed new build luxury apartment block in the Grantham town centre (£4.5m), and a 24 bed apartment block in Peterborough (£2.5m), both of which had various challenging opportunities to overcome due to their location and site restrictions. I experienced working alongside the company’s Managing Director, Contracts Manager, Designer, Lead Engineer and Construction Managers, both on site and within the Office.
