As Engineering Technician at the Kimberley railway depot, I was part of the technical support team for infrastructure maintenance. I did architectural remodelling of facilities to suit HSE human factor compliance.

    In 1993 I was vice-chairperson of the student council of the School of Architecture, Building & Civil & representative to the Technikon's SRC. In 1994 I earned SAFCEC Student of the Year Award for the school of ABC. In 1995 I arranged for the SAICE annual bridge building competition to include historically disadvantaged high schools in Kimberley and secured Transnet sponsorship to the event.
