In this role Allen works closely with the Project Directors and Technical Leaders to deliver large civil and water engineering projects. He manages and leads detailed design of water infrastructure projects and ensures the project deliverables are aligned with wider GHD objectives and contracted services.
Achievements:
• I developed project plans, controls, management approaches and established communication channels with all stakeholders on detailed design of distribution service reservoir projects;
• I managed available resources in line with project requirements, ensuring sufficient resources and skills are available to deliver agreed outcomes;
• I managed commercial and organisational risks associated with project contracts and proactively worked with commercial and legal teams seeking guidance on commercial and contractual risks;
• I collaborated with others across disciplines to brainstorm and execute solutions to complex, uncommon problems;
• I supported the project director on implementing BIM360 quality management systems and ensured that quality management processes and systems are understood and available to project teams
• Managed Tokomaru WTP Relocation, Foxton WWTP Upgrade and Irrigation and Levin WWTP Digester Upgrade from proposal to construction and then to commission and handover;
• Planned, executed and closed out projects using Downer Project Management Methodology thus providing common and consistent approach to managing projects under my stewardship;
• I improved efficiencies and effectiveness in project delivery leading to projects being completed on time, within budget and to the right quality and health and safety standards;
• I worked collaboratively with other design disciplines, sub-consultants and contractors associated with projects to ensure the integration of the overall design and participated in development of technical proposals;
• I undertook verification checking of elements of work and associated documentation/reports to ensure that they meet or exceed client expectations and that they comply with national standards and codes of practice;
• I planned project/design reviews and facilitated resolution of project issues and risks with all stakeholders. I presented technical solutions and regularly communicated residual risks, changes and progress to managers and the client;
• I engaged design sub consultants and subcontractors using appropriate Downer Agreement clearly defining their contract conditions;
• Managed project claims, payments, variations and forecasted estimates at completion;
• Provided technical advice to management.

• Prepared technical reports and presentations for client review.
• Responsible for working on diverse projects from inception to completion under various roles (civil engineer, site engineer and project engineer);
• During this period, I successfully supervised the construction of flood defence walls, a pumping station, a washwater tank, a surge vessel and refurbishment of rapid gravity filters (RGFs);
• I successfully managed the delivery of Kidderminster STW Phosphorus Removal Plant, Stoney Stanton STW refurbishments, Hoo Brook Pump Station (PS) and PR09 Dual Manholes from feasibility to detailed design;
• I arranged meetings with the STWL service delivery teams to establish hydraulic problems on STWL sites and constructed computer hydraulic models to replicate the wastewater treatment works using HADES modelling software;
• I collaborated with the contractor to improve constructability of the design and arranged design review meetings;
• I used project management delivery tools to ensure deliverables were produced to agreed quality standards, on programme and to budget.
The MSc programme consisted 8 taught courses: Project Management, Foundation Engineering, Water and Waste Water Treatment, Project Management: Strategic Issues, Value & Risk Management , Sustainability in Civil Engineering, Urban Drainage and Water Supply. I did a dissertation on sustainability rating tools.
It was a 5 year degree programme with one year of industrial placement.
