I am in the process of completing this degree. While it is an online program, it is from a highly respected State University in the United States. The Museum Studies graduate program prepares you to confidently face the major challenges involved in museum operation including, management procedures, budget administration, exhibit and educational programming, and community interaction. Courses address museum management procedures, budget administration, exhibit and educational programming, and community interaction. Faculty members are drawn from museums across the country, including two AAM-accredited museums located at the University of Oklahoma – the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. I have completed 18 of the 33 required credit hours.
The major part of the program consists of studio work and includes instruction in the principles of design and the use of various media. Students examine influencing and prevailing social issues, and study how to reflect the energy of contemporary society. Taken in combination with lectures and seminars in Art History this offers a link to both historical cultures and contemporary means of expression. Students also study the business aspects of the art field, understanding to mechanics of setting up their own capstone exhibition.
