Detailed Job Description

ER nurses provide care for patients from various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention and must be able to recognize and and effectively treat life-threatening conditions.

Position Responsibilities

ER Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of ER Nurses include (but are not limited to):
ƒ
 Collects and records vital signs and current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans
 Performs TRIAGE, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements
 Initiating and/ or assist in cardiac and respiratory resuscitations during cardiac and respiratory arrest and other life-threatening conditions of patient. Stabilizes patient until attending physician is availableƒ
 Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing (prepares patient for various investigations like X-rays, ECG, Ultrasound and MRI etc.) and treatments.
 Collects blood and other specimen samples while maintaining medical and surgical asepsis
 Prepares and administers oral and parenteralmedications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medicationsƒ
 Provides IV therapy. Cleans and bandages wounds. Provides bedside care
 Assists the physicians in suturing of wounds, Lumbar puncture, Cutdown, Intubation, chest tube insertion, paracentesis, debridement, Cast and Thomas splint application and Physician examinations. lavage, irrigation, dressing of wounds, giving enemas, ambubagging, buccal/ endotracheal and tracheal suctioning; Maintains cleanliness, aseptic technique in handling patient’s contraptions e.g., Foley Catheter, Nasograstic Tube, Intravenous fluids, Endotracheal tube/ Tracheostomy tube.
 Proper care and maintenance for proper functioning to patients e.g. Mechanical Ventilator, Cardiac Monitors, ECG, Infusion Pumps, Syringe Pump, Pulse Oximeter, Suction Apparatus, Oxygen, Intubation Set, Emergency Kit, BP Apparatus.
 Assists patients all times such cases of Discharge Against Medical Advice.
 Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies ƒ
 Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment ƒ
 Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner. Maintains good relationships with hospital personnelƒ
 Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
 Participates emergency nurse certification trainings and other health service activities
 Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting
