Karratha City Centre Parking Audit, Arup, WA, Australia

Arup has been engaged to assist the City of Karratha in conducting a parking audit for the Karratha City Centre. The City of Karratha required a parking audit of existing and planned Karratha City Centre parking supply and an inventory of these parking assets and how parking is being utilised currently.

Ahmad was in charge of the project management, technical assessment and report writing for this study and providing assistance for the City of Karratha to better understand how much parking is and will be available in the City Centre for the foreseeable future, which would accordingly enable the City to make more informed decisions regarding parking supply and management across the whole City Centre, and will inform how parking supply and use should be monitored in the future.


Adelaide Terrace Bus Lanes Concept Study

The Public Transport Authority (PTA) commissioned Arup to undertake a concept study for the addition of bus lanes on Adelaide Terrace between Victoria Avenue and the Causeway.

Before engaging into preliminary cost and benefit analysis and progressing to concept design and cost estimates for the proposed bus lanes along this corridor, a traffic modelling exercise was undertaken to investigate the impact of installing bus only lanes along the section of Adelaide Terrace between Victoria Ave to the Causeway and to inform PTA if the proposed concept has material benefit in enhancing bus travel times along the study corridor.
Ahmad was in charge of project management, technical assessment and report writing in addition to facilitating and coordinating the following activities;
• Site observations and desktop analysis has been used to understand the existing function of the study corridor.
• Analysis of actual bus travel time data to capture optimum times to apply the bus lanes;
• Kerb side parking utilisation assessment in order to understand the optimum hours of operation for the proposed bus lanes.

Burswood Station East, Arup, WA, Australia

Arup were commissioned by The Town of Victoria Park (the Town) to review work undertaken by others (Flyt and SKM), and to critically consider whether transport infrastructure can support development proposed in the Burswood Station East (BSE) precinct.

Ahmad was the project manager for this study which culminated into back-cast land use and working backwards to determine realistic LU and parking maxima based on conventional vs. ToD trip rates. These estimates were contingent on meeting intersection performance targets which underwent SIDRA analysis/sensitivity testing during peak periods to evaluate these performance thresholds.

Lots 805, 806, 3 Vista Karnup Transport Assessment, Arup, WA, Australia

Arup was commissioned by Gold Right Pty Ltd to prepare this Transport Assessment (TA) for the proposed Karnup Local Structure Plan. The LSP extends over Lots 3, 805 and 806, all of which are adjoining east of Mandurah Road with a total combined area of approximately 113.33ha.
Arup was involved in further SIDRA analysis to assess additional access scenarios to the full development comprising Lots 806, 3 and 805 and their impact on the Mandurah Road/Singleton Beach Road intersection. It was also agreed that Arup will produce a new TA for the entire LSP area
Ahmad was in charge of the project management, technical assessment and report writing for this study which ended by assessing interim and ultimate development accessibility scenarios and intersection upgrades.

• Conducting detailed of the assigned project consultant work to create an updated Transportation Master Plan for Khalifa City, and ensuring technical tasks assigned to the review team are carried out and meet the appropriate standards.

• Managing traffic investigations, ensuring It will address operational design, planning and policy issues within the context of transportation and land use planning.

• Contribution to car park and management and to the planning of multi-modal transportation, including emergency service vehicles, linkage to bus and rail, and active modes including walking and cycling.

• Ensuring the planning process for the comprehensive Transportation Master Plan had been fully integrated with the standardized Municipal Assessment Process and satisfying all the requirements.

Pedestrian and Bikeway Masterplan - Team Leader في Abu Dhabi Municipality

• This plan in essence is envisaged to serve as an important reference document that can ensure that bicycle facilities are considered during road maintenance and reconstruction, as well as when important land use decisions are made.

• Oversee the organization of community workshops to receive input as well as to inform citizens, staff, stakeholders, and other agencies about the Plan.

• Assisting the project team as well as the assigned project consultant in developing a comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian master plan that identifies optimal biking and walking routes and preferred treatments.

• Actively participating in the project steering committee consisting of representatives from the AbuDhabi City different agencies and stakeholders, and coordinating with the consultant throughout the plan process to identify project priorities, funding strategies and changes to existing standards, codes and ordinances in the final Master Plan.

• Helping the consultant in the review of existing and proposed bikeway facilities for AbuDhabi City, and providing all available materials to the including projects that have been constructed, have been recently completed, are under construction, are funded, are in design, and are proposed for the future.

• Working together with the project consultant to formulate a criteria to determine the most appropriate type of bicycle facility required (i.e. on-street bike lanes, off-street bike paths, shared-use paths, signed bike routes) for each of the streets identified in the network. Aspects such as available pavement width, available right-of-way, community input, and site specific conditions were all taken into consideration.

• Providing engineering recommendations including typical sections for new roadways based on roadway classifications, education and encouragement recommendations, economic, environmental, and Community recommendations, and Multi-Modal Connection recommendations.

• Helping the project consultant in compiling and analyzing all data collected and compiled and develop a preliminary bicycle network comprehensive and continuous bicycle and pedestrian network that is appropriately distributed throughout the city of AbuDhabi based on the routes suitability for bicycling and walking without improvement; potential to be improved, destinations served public interest in the route, contribution to overall connectivity, city coverage, and other possible factors.

• Highlighting other major destinations within the public realm system and making sure the trail functions as an island central ped/bike movement route connected to these destinations, notably the waterfronts, and through major east‐west water to water connecters.

The revitalization schemes for Bainunah Blvd. went beyond enhancing the pedestrian environment to becoming a catalyst for surrounding redevelopment and exemplifying the city’s commitment to progress, innovation, and design excellence.

• Working together with the project appointed consultant to formulate a careful approach to planning and design that will reinforce the important values behind this revitalization scheme such as enhancing neighborhood character, sustainable growth and diversity, economic vitality, attention to cultural values and effective infrastructure development, and then revise, detail and finalize the assignment scope of work, proposed program and schedule, and expected deliverables and timelines.

• Working together with the project appointed consultant in gathering, review and assessment of existing background information, plans and studies; collection of topographic data; compilation of photographic record/inventory of the boulevard conditions; and review of information collected and developed, and preparation of technical report.

• Developing a Conceptual Revitalization Plan for the Bainunah Boulevard that includes a number of alternative solutions and scenarios, with a set of evaluation and assessment criteria to support the favored scenario, taking into account the ceremonial function of the boulevard.

• Working together with the project appointed consultant in the preliminary design stage which included preparing design criteria to define and qualify the types of public spaces within the public realm of the boulevard (e.g. sidewalk café, cycle track, activity nodes such as sitting areas and transit plazas, gateway, etc.). This had been followed by prepare final design drawings and tender documents.

Remodeling of Bus Laybys - Team Leader في Abu Dhabi Municipality

• The main objective of this project was to ensure that all bus stops in Abu Dhabi City are made fully accessible for all low floor buses and all pushchairs.

• Facilitating easy passenger access to and from the stop positions, including wheel and pushchairs.

• Facilitating unobstructed passenger movement within, and pedestrian movement past the bus stop waiting area including wheel and pushchairs.

• Allowing easy passenger access onto and off the bus incorporating measures to prevent other vehicles from parking or stopping within the stop area.

• Introducing raised kerbs to provide near level boarding with low floor buses.

• Removal or relocation of bus lay-bys to ease bus approach and assist in rejoining the traffic flow.

• Suggesting measures to cut traffic flows through congested neighborhoods and making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

• Had a leading role in conducting this TIS for Centro Hotel Al Barsha, which has been done to establish an understanding of what impact to the transportation infrastructure will the demand for travel impose.

• Responsibilities included performing manual distribution for the trips across origins and destinations in addition to the allocation of these trips to the adjoining corridors. Synchro was utilized as a testing tool to curry out performance assessment and the results were used to develop solutions to mitigate that impact. Arranging meetings with the client and was also responsible for report writing.

It was an excellent opportunity to join their growing team and to develop my career alongside some of the strongest transport and traffic teams, working together to achieve successful project delivery and exceptional results for clients in transportation planning and traffic engineering. This proficient firm worked across a range of industries but were particularly busy across transport projects where they had some of the largest and most highly reputable projects in UAE; like Dubai Metro Project, Etihad Towers, St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Meydan Racecourse Development, and Madinat Jumeirah Resort.

Employed as a traffic engineer and a transportation planner, I was mainly responsible for performing traffic investigations, providing recommendations to traffic/parking issues, development of traffic management schemes, technical report writing and responding to enquiries from clients.

• Worked as a Transportation planner and traffic engineer for this big comprehensive study. The study included studying the accessibility to and from the 21 metro stations that lie on both the Red and Green Metro Lines.

• Monitoring the existing traffic circulation, the pedestrian movement patterns and the existing street facilities located in a 500 m radius area around each station as part of gathering data for the traffic study report of the project.

• Main task was developing an accessibility plan to all the metro stations and to ensure the proper integration with other modes including pedestrians, cyclists, busses, and taxis.

• Analyzing base year traffic counts at various key junctions within the study area in order to validated VISUM model results by using SYNCHRO software.

• Perform the operational analysis in the study area using VISSIM. Focus on pedestrian flow and interface with the public transportation system. Assessing problematic areas and proposed the appropriate solutions to mitigate the problems.

• Worked as a Transportation planner and traffic engineer for this new metro station that lies on the Dubai Green Metro Line.

• The challenge in this study is that the station is located in the most congested commercial area in the centre of the old CBD in Deira, Dubai.

• The study aimed to change the nature of the whole Baniyas area into a pedestrian friendly area that promotes the use of public transport.

• Main task was developing an accessibility plan to the metro station and to ensure the proper integration with other modes including pedestrians, cyclists, busses, and taxis.

• Tested the internal vehicular circulation at the parking using the software AUTOTURN & proposing solutions at problematic areas.. Proposing & drafting road access alternatives from the main road to the development.

• Main task was to manage a group of transportation modellers and traffic engineer to facilitate estimating trip generation, trip distribution & no. of parking required.

• Managed traffic engineering team in conducting traffic analysis traffic using SIDRA and Synchro to find delay, LOS & queue length. Also conducting micro simulation using VISSIM at roundabouts.

• In charge of preparation of transport assessment reports and liaising with the authority and client.

• A parking management exercise was undertaken to complement the completion of a Traffic Impact Study for the proposed new RTA headquarter.

• This study was meant to accomplish more efficient use of RTA parking basement, and ended up with a set of recommendations which included improved design operations, enhanced accessibility and circulation plans, convenient signage and wayfinding systems, and preserved safety measures.

• Worked as Traffic Engineer and a Transportation Modeller within a transportation master planning team for this major new urban development in Dubai.

• Modelling work included several aspects of the strategic road networks and interchanges with the help of traffic micro-simulation tools like Synchro, SIDRA and Vissim. Proposing and analyzing different road solution scenarios for external and internal roads.

• Conducting detailed analysis of interchanges using the Vissim microsimulation software and intersection analysis using Synchro, and also preparing the TMP Report.

• Checking the adequacy of parking provided & testing the vehicular circulation within the parking lot using the software AUTOTURN.

• Worked as a Transport Planner and Traffic Engineer and played a leading role in the TIS packages associated with Dubai Waterfront and Palm Jebel Ali TMP; including Badrah, Crescent A, spine and Fronds, Madinat Al Arab, Al Oud, Veneto and Crescent E.

• In charge of estimating trip generation, trip distribution & no. of parking required. Transport demand modelling and designing of interchanges and intersection and testing them using various transportation software.

• Designing intersection and phasing and signal timing for the impacted intersections and testing them and report writing. Analyzing the weaving sections & access safety by conducting micro-simulation using VISSIM. Analyzed the operational conditions of for the proposed roadway networks and intersection and proposed mitigation measures to finalize the optimal network configuration.
