Student Ambassador
The University of Manchester
Total years of experience :9 years, 4 Months
Selling the university to prospective students and their parents, enabled me to strengthen my persuasion skills and quickly build strong relationships with the students.
•Answering questions about the university on student panels and open days has enhanced my communication abilities.
•Being approachable and welcoming at all times is important; this allows me to provide excellent customer service and build a rapport with students.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced environment is essential for this role.
- Tutoring primary school pupils in Maths and English has enabled me to develop my organisation and communication skills, as all lessons have to be planned prior to the session and then effectively communicated to ensure maximum understanding.
- I have also developed my leadership skills, as I have to control the progression of the sessions and ensure that the pupils are each developing personally and academically.
This role is all about increasing the brand awareness of Frontline on campus and essentially 'selling' the brand to potential applicants. To do this, I have to be creative and utilise various different platforms to spread the word, e.g. lecture shout-outs, having stalls, hosting events and much more.
•I have successfully increased awareness across campus, as evidenced by the high number of signups for Frontline's graduate programme who study at my university.
Communicating with young offenders about their offence.
•Working in a team with other panel members, enabled me to develop team-work skills.
•As a panel member, being non-judgemental is of the utmost importance; listening and empathising with the young offenders taught me more about how to be open-minded.
•When things don't go to plan, I have to be resilient and adapt to the situation by using different ways to get the young person to engage in the sessions; this has developed my problem-solving skills and shows I am determined to not give up when facing adversity.
I volunteered on two different research projects, one to do with OCD and the other about suicidality in prisons. As part of these projects, I had to transcribe interviews and engage in complex data analysis, both of which required meticulous attention to detail.
•Through conducting this data analysis, I strengthened my numeracy and analytical skills.
Developing excellent knowledge of key issues underpinning many psychological concepts, including statistics, social psychology, behavioural economics (e.g. game theory) and research methods. •Strategy, Organisation and Competition has taught me a lot about how important it is to ensure effective communication exists between the different divisions of a company, and also the different types of strategy a business can take. This module has increased my commercial awareness •Social Psychology taught me about how groups form, how stereotypes influence the decisions that people make and what strategies can be implemented to persuade people to act in a certain way. •Developing excellent communication skills by working with a variety of groups and presenting in front of peers, and strengthening written skills through essay writing. •IT: confident in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint - I have used the latter as part of my group work in Psychology
