*Day-to-day supervision of diagnostic methods, examination of specimens, authorization & interpretation of the results obtained
*Responsible for quality assurance within the department, including taking part in all relevant national-external quality assurance programmes
*Responsible for achieving and maintaining full accreditation of the laboratory
*Business planning including the assessment & introduction of new methods, and forward planning for staff & equipment requirements
Liaison with veterinarians and hospital staff concerning the diagnosis and management of patients and prevention of infection
Advising on hospital policies for antibiotic & disinfectant use and infection control
Investigation and prevention of emerging and communicable disease in the field
Supervision and training of junior veterinary staff in veterinary microbiology
Contributing to management within the trust, via the directorate structure
To carry out appropriate research and analysis of laboratory data
