Being a graduate with financial background, I was inducted directly into a management position. After all the required training was done, I started to market the different products and recruiting representatives to work in my team. During my first month of sales, I was the branch champion with the most sales. In just eight months I had a team of eight qualified representatives.

My duties were as follow:
• Financial planning for clients regarding life assurance and investments
• Built a team of 8 representatives in my team
• Training and planning with representatives
• Budgeting and planning for my team and the branch
• Managing functions on an ongoing basis

At this stage of my career I felt that experience was gained in numerous aspects of business and decided to purchase a company with three partners and resigned.

My duties were as follow:
Prepare, examine, analyze accounting records, financial statements, other financial
reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and
procedural standards.
Report to management regarding the finances of establishment.
Establish tables of accounts and assign entries to proper accounts.

Cost Accountant at Council for Mineral Technology
  • South Africa
  • January 1988 to September 1988

During this time I was responsible for project costing and monthly reporting to the Directors on the performance of the different projects in the eight divisions of the company. To do this, I had to develop a system using DBASE 4 Plus and Lotus123. From the first month the reports could give an accurate indication of the actual costs versus budgeted cost with projections of final costs and whether additional funds should be budgeted for the projects.
At that stage, the scientists at Mintek did projects for international and local companies in specialised scientific fields.
The valuable experience gained in costing and computer literacy would be very valuable later in my career.

1982 to 1984 - Studied at the Military Academy - University of Stellenbosch and was based in Saldana Bay, Western Cape, South Africa. This was truly an honour being selected as one of thirteen students to complete the degree in Commercial Science, from thousands of applicants.
