• Al Udeid Air Base Value of approx QAR 2.5 billion ($700 million)
Client side Project Manager for a large scale Military Aviation project procured on a design and build basis.
Project works involved multiple buildings including aircraft hangars, warehouses, office and other support buildings as well as the associated infrastructure. The construction works were carried out on an operating military airbase with multiple users, often adjacent to active aircraft areas.
Role Synopsis:
• Project Management Responsibilities:
Managing project documentation for and on behalf of the client including progress reports, contractual letters and other project records.
Chairing progress meetings with the Contractor, briefing meetings with the facility users and facilitating coordination between other operators on the base.
• Design Reviews:
Designs are prepared by the Contractor and submitted to the client’s office for review and approval.
The role includes coordinating multidiscipline reviews of the Contractor’s designs to ensure compliance with the specifications and the client’s requirements. Design documents submitted include calculations, drawings, materials, method statements etc.
• Site Supervision:
Construction works are monitored on behalf of the client to ensure adherence to the designs and specifications. Comprehensive records are maintained to record the progress of the works as well as the details and quality of the works.
• Reporting Structure:
Report to project director and client
Oversee a team of 8 senior technical staff supported by approx. 20 junior technical staff and site inspectors.
Senior Structural Engineer with Buro Happold, based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Projects included:
• Almarai Cheese Plant and Cold Store Value of approx SAR 110million (€22million)
Structures leader for the design of a 24, 000m2 extension to an existing Cheese Production facility and a new 6, 000m2 PCC cold store building. The roles involved the management of the structural design team and coordination with a multi discipline team to deliver the project for a major client
• King Saud University Girls Campus Project Value of approx SAR 8.5 billion (€1.6billion).
Construction of a new campus at the King Saud University, Riyadh by the Saudi Bin Laden Corporation. The role involved working as part of the Buro Happold QC and Design Review team on site, liaising with the contractor and the consultants to manage the construction quality.
2008 to 2010 Shannon Airport Projects Engineer
Seconded from WYG to work in the Capital Development & Engineering Department at Shannon airport. The position provided the opportunity to work in a more project management based capacity on airside and landside projects.
Projects included:
• Taxiway D Rehabilitation Value of approx €6million.
Clients Representative
Upgrade of a main taxiway at Shannon Airport including pavement reconstruction, pavement overlay, replacement of drainage and aircraft ground lighting systems. Role included coordinating and reviewing designs with the consultants, acquiring and reviewing tenders and liaising with airport operations on design and construction issues.
• US Customs & Border protection Building Value of approx €20 million.
Clients Representative
Construction of a significant extension at Shannon Airport to house a new US CBP facility. The project involved the construction of a complex building in very confined, live airport site within a very tight programme. Role included coordinating and reviewing designs with the consultants and liaising with airport operations on design and construction issues.
• Fuel Terminal Environmental Improvement works Value of approx €4million.
Resident Engineer
Upgrade of the Shannon Airport Fuel Terminal to construct a new RC bund around the 80 million litre storage facility. The project involved the construction of reinforced concrete slabs and walls, the installation of a new lightning protection system and adjustments to the mechanical pipe work within an operating fuel terminal. Role involved acting as resident engineer on site to monitor the construction process on behalf of the client and to liaise between the contractor and the facility operators. The project involved significant operational and health & safety issues
Position involved increasing responsibility on projects including design and delivery steel and concrete framed buildings and public authority housing schemes projects
Lead design engineer on a projects including:
• Mixed development at Flancare Tipperary town a retail development with a Contract Value of approx €12million.
Lead design engineer A retail development including a shopping centre anchored by Dunnes Stores, retail warehousing, large surface car parking areas and basement car park. The Shopping centre building had a reinforced concrete suspended ground floor slab and a steel super structure. The retail warehouse units were constructed using a pre-cast concrete frame and included a basement car park.
• Wyeth Medica - Newbridge III project, a €75million extension to the production facility at Newbridge, Co. Kildare.
Civil, Structural & Architectural lead engineer on site for Wyeth on site during the construction of the Newbridge 3 extension of the pharmaceutical facility in Co. Kildare. The project was a multi storey steel framed building to house additional production facilities. The role on site was as a member of the client’s representative team. Challenges on this project included ensuring no disruption to production, the proximity of the site to employees working in the facility and security & safety controls on site.
• Wyeth Nutritionals, Tank Farm Value approx. €5million:
Lead design engineer. Steel framed building to house large elevated storage tanks at the Wyeth baby food facility in Limerick. The project involved the design and construction of a complicated building on a very confined site. The design had to incorporate stringent client detailing requirements to suit the food production end use of the building.
• Worked in the project management section of Connell Wagner’s Sydney office on the roll out of the Ozitel and Optus mobile phone networks. The involved working as a part of a design team which included representatives from the various stake holders. The role included assessing the capacity of existing structures and the design of supports for telecommunications equipment. This position required working on a large number of sites within a tight time frame. It also involved extensive AutoCAD use.
• The role as graduate engineer included industrial building design including reinforced concrete and structural steel framed buildings. Opportunity to learn to use AutoCAD and other computer packages.
